Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

Thanks everyone!
We have ordered the hardware to install the 85# Mantus on our roller. Lots of folks (including dock mate) say once we put the Mantus on, we will never use the 30kg Bruce again. We will carry the 16# Danford and 7.5kg Bruce as secondaries. Income from selling the big Bruce and SuperMax will fund 200’ of kedging rode. We will trim almost 300# off our payload, have higher function and open up a large deck locker for some other whoha.

BTW ...
Spoke with Mantus about the hole drilled through the shank. Their answer - no compromise in strength and they would still warranty the shank should it bend. Good Answer!

Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

I had a Mantus - came with the boat. After dragging once I replaced it with a Rocna - MUCH better.

Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

have used the a 40 lbs Max since 1995 on a 36 ft C&C sloop with the middle setting permanently, on the British Columbia west coast and never found a reason to change, once set it NEVER drags, and it usually sets fairly well in most bottoms we encountered up and down the coast and around Vancouver Island. Have re-galvanized it once and straitened out on slightly bent fluke

Scratch the last - a typo. I had a SuperMax that I replaced with a Rocna. Mantus are great too.

Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

That is a Super Max, it was our first anchor for the first 3 years of cruising and anchoring in most places the Caribbean, Azores, Med., Canary Islands, Cape Verde etc. It held very well all the time never dragged but we always felt it was underwieght 44lbs. So then we upgraded to a 66lb Spade. We still have it on the bow roller as secondary anchor. Never had to use it again since, the spade lets us sleep happier.

Fortress (aluminum) is a great all around backup anchor. They are light enough that you can swim them out while using a boat fender or life jacket. Very handy to get yourself un-stuck when you run aground. My primary is a Spade, love it.

Re: Help ID this Anchor - Any Good?

I have always favored the Bruce.....in 35 years, cannot recall a time I dragged one...75' chain and then nylon....perfect combo imo...

I have sold 3 boats now, all equipped with the Bruce and chain as described above. First thing new owners did, much to my chagrin, was to change out the anchors....so go figure...

Anchor selection is a highly personal matter. Perfect for me, is clearly not perfect for someone else.

But..having said that, besides the Bruce I also carried three other types, in the unlikely event a Bruce was not up to the task....

Having a selection of anchor choices onboard is likely the best way to go about it.....

Keep the the 30 kg. Bruce on the bow roller. Great anchor and our primary for twenty years.

I am surprised you got corrosion on the rollbar that early. The galvanizing on our #45lb M1 is holding up very well after 4 years, and for the last two years of full-time cruising it has been on the bottom more than it has been on the roller since until the last few months of COVID we rarely stayed at marinas.

The anchor is by no means shiny and bright any more, but the only rust visible is on the bolts and nuts.

For something that gets burried in and dragged through all sorts of sand, rocks, clay and mud I am simply amazed at how well it is resisting the elements and salt water so far.
