Re: Help! Geico is no longer writing for sailboats!!!!!

I'd like to see Geico and Boat US part ways. I'm still a member of Boat US and have their towing insurance. I dropped the boat coverage several years ago and got boat coverage under my homeowners policy at 1/2 the cost and much better coverage. It did require a survey. Just my experience.

Geico suck,State Farm also, they dropped me too. Even if you dare to use them for a claim, you are going to have a problem when it comes to re-newal..

Speaking of Geico, I just switched back to them having been away for four years. I believe it is the best procedure to re bid your marine insurance every year or two, as companies underwriting goals and claims experience change their perspective. Never been cancelled by any insurance company.

Re: Help! Geico is no longer writing for sailboats!!!!!

I've been insured with Geico for 8 years, 34 ft 1986 sailboat. Sold that boat and bought a 1989 38 ft boat. Geico refused to cover anything longer than 35 ft, same with Progressive. Non-commercial, Florida.

The options are:
Concept for any hull value, just about any age vessel
YachtInsure* for vessels valued over $150,000
LJJ (Lloyds)* for vessels valued over $250,000
UMU (United Marine Underwriters) - no liveaboards, no absentee owners, boat must be less than 30 years old. Owner must have 3 years experience. But very competitive rates if you meet fall within those criteria.
* quotes for these two companies may exclude windstorm damage.
"no liveaboards, no absentee owners", pick one, either I'm on the boat, or I'm not.

Is this Schrodinger's boater?

Looking at my renewal notice now with Geico. They have added: "If you have moved your boat to or your boat is primarily located in the water in NC, SC, FL, AL, La, or TX and your boat is over 30 feet in length, please submit your hurricane plan via our self-service site at boatus.com/account."

Re: Help! Geico is no longer writing for sailboats!!!!!

We have a 46’over 20 year old catamaran and it is a “COMMERCIAL” captained charter vessel. Shopped around and got told no by the big guys and then I found this agent:

An actual sailor named Rod Klingman out of Mystic, CT. He got me Berkley Offshore Marine Insurance with decent coverage limits for less than $2,000 a year. (I think it was about $1,800). The nice part was he got me options and did so quickly. I don’t know the guy personally but several charter captain friends also use him. Sharing his number in case it helps.

I used to be a big fan of USAA when I first joined in '91. They've progressively gotten worse and worse, with the majority of the products they offer just white labels of another company's product. In those cases, USAA doesn't stand behind the product and is often deceptive in not clearly telling you that you're buying a white label of another company. In my opinion they're just riding their past reputation and the military community's tendency to stick with what they see as the standard issue choice. In every situation I've comparison shopped they are no longer the best value, often by a lot. I'm no longer a fan or a customer.
To MSgt and redneckrob,

I'm in the same boat (so to speak) with USAA. They were great when I first signed up with them, but they have Progressively (see what I did there?) gotten worse and worse over the years. We moved our investments out, then our homeowners insurance, our boat insurance, and may soon move our car insurance out as well.

Re: Help! Geico is no longer writing for sailboats!!!!!

Not talking about any insurance company specifically, but with some of the stories I read in the news about the flimsy pretexts on which they deny claims, the whole industry strikes me as one big giant economy sized racket.

I recall that Minaret's insurance didn't do right by him when there was a fire because some dope dropped a lit butt.

GEICO did renew my insurance this month for 20-year old 38' Beneteau, based in Tampa Bay. No change to agreed value.

Re: Help! Geico is no longer writing for sailboats!!!!!

I think there is something else going on here. I had no problem getting my boat insured w/ Geico at the end of last year. To cancel during a policy year, per the OP, is something I have never heard of. We haven’t heard all the details regarding this particular instance.

American Modern doesn’t want full time cruisers. They rejected me with this statement: “We have discussed the itinerary and we are going to pass on this risk. This amount of “cruising” is more than we are comfortable with. We understand they are not cruising 100% of the time, but it’s more than we are willing to approve.”

I asked if full time cruisers represent higher risk than dock queens, but didn’t get an answer. Anyone in the business know the statistics?
