Help finding a Name

We have ordered a new boat. We have spent lots of time working out what to get how to outfit her etc.

Biggest problem we have now besides waiting for her to be built is what to call her.

The name is important. It must have roll off the tongue, be easy to say three times, easily understood, be able to spell phonetically and hopefully be meaningful and not used by hundreds of other boats. It can't be after someone alive, and once set difficult to change. ARRRGH!

Where did you start? Any good resources? Please help

Kinda a weird question to ask the forum. Just think about it for 6 months and it will come to you. WHen it does you will know it and it will seem right.

Worst boat name ever? WINDSONG!!! they are everywhere. Very,very uncreative. If you see 1 boat with your same name in every marina, its time to pick again. Name changing is easy, just paint or custom stickers.

I like that you have considered phonetics. To many owners come up with such weird names that if ever they have to call in a sched to the coastal patrol, "barry" back at the base, will never understand the name.

Using a family names like "Debbie-Michelle or Sonias Dream" is a little off my radar too. So I am hearing you.

Oh and knowing the cost of a new FP, I wish naming the boat was my biggest problem hehe.

Here's a "cool story bro" for you about boat names...

I've gone the opposite route. I've had the name I wanted to give my boat since college. When I went partners with my dad on our Catalina, my mom hated the name and exercised her veto power. But this is not a cool story about the pitfalls of boat partnerships...

So,at the end of June we took possession of our own boat. The admiral understood the importance of my naming dream, so we changed the boats name when we bought it. However, after a couple of island trips, and a few months of owning her, my long time dream name just didn't fit the boat. It's hard to explain, but it just didn't seem right.

I have all the paperwork on the boat, and she was christened in 1976 with the name "Wind Quest." I'm not a huge fan of the name, and I would never choose to name a new boat that, but it just seems right for her. So, we've decided to return the original name, and "Wind Quest" she is once more. And it works, and we both love it.

Maybe we're just freaks, but it really seems like a boat names itself, and trying to force it won't work. Maybe name it "the boat" or something until you get to know her. The problem then may solve itself.

I bought a 38 year old boat. Changing the name is probably the cheapest project I'll have! :-)

USCG wants $24 last time I checked, but my lender demands $100 to sign off on the required CG form!

If you are an old salt (like me and many here), the thought of changing a boats name fills me with dread. Superstition says you can only change a boats name if you ahve taken her in battle. If you have, she has been shamed will endure a name change - quite willing actually.

Sans that, changing a boat is a huge decision. the boat will resist it and it will be very bad luck and worse karma. There is a very long ceremony that should be used with a name change. My advice is to use it.

If you must have a name, how about:

Amica

Italian for "my mistress or my lover or my love" or something very close. There are several meanings, depending on how you pronounce it.

You probably won't find many boats with that name in the states.....

Or

Skat

Danish word and has three meanings:

Darling
Treasure
Taxes (yup taxes)

Skat is pronounced as an SK with the american word "at" after SK AT

This is a really dumb superstition. While I was at sea I never once sailed on a ship whose name had not been changed. Unless you are sailing on new tonnage the name of the boat has been changed.

When we purchased our boat this year, there was no question that we were changing her name. We made it all official and went through the naming ceremony and spilled and drank plenty of champangne in order to appease the sea gods.
