Haul out in Darwin.

Hello all Australian-located salties,

Planning to haul our 14.6m Mumby aluminium alloy Cybercat in Darwin in November. Store over the cyclone season.

Only marina for a 7.5m width is Cullen Bay Marina. Concerned about stray current as others have found their zincs dissolved there.

Seems one option is Spot On Marine. Expensive. Has anybody had any experience hauling and storing at SOM?

Are there other options?

Tx,

Jeff.

Re: Haul out in Darwin.

There is a multihull club in Darwin which has a boat storage yard across the road from Spot on Marine.

I carried out a hull refit in Spot on Marine during the 2012-13 cyclone season. The yard is fairly well run and Suzy and Michael fairly nice people.

The only thing which bothered me about these places in Darwin as cyclone holes is that they are not far above high tide during springs and a coincidence of high spring tides and storm surge might be problematic.

Re: Haul out in Darwin.

Thanks RaymondR,

Yes, storm surge is a big issue. I have asked Spot On how high above HAT their yard is with no reply. I plan to take a look myself in a couple of weeks.

TC Tracy resulted in a storm surge of only 2m at Fanny Bay. At high tide but during a neap tide period.

Winds of 217km/h before the anemometer blew away would be very destructive also. And, Tracy is not the only severe cyclone to cause destruction in Darwin.

But, one wonders how well Cullen Bay Marina would do in a similar cyclone, despite it being a "registered cyclone haven".

Jeff.

Re: Haul out in Darwin.

There are three other locked marinas, which are entered from a creek running out of the harbour which would be better protected if the lock gates are wide enough.

Re: Haul out in Darwin.

Thanks RaymondR,

We are 7.5m beam so Cullen Bay is the only marina, unless something has changed.

With an aluminium cat I am concerned about stray current in Cullen Bay Marina as my friends have had their zincs dissolve over a 6 month stay there.

Has anybody had the same experience with stray current in Cullen Bay Marina? Zincs dissolving?

Tx
