Harken Waterbug Challenge

Hello,
I have a buddy with an old Harken Waterbug sitting around in a Wearhouse. A Waterbug is a type of man powered peddle boat. It has a deep keel and low profile for its size. It’s just there in mint condition with all its parts. They were advertised to move at 6 knots but I’m sure it’s closer to 3.

For years I wanted to borrow this thing and attempt some long distance challenges. 30 miles down the bay or 50 miles crossing the gulf to the Bahamas.

A few years back someone crossed the English Channel in one. Maybe with the right conditions I could cross the Gulf Stream.

Anyways, I’m just throwing the idea out there to see if anyone would be interested in such an embarrassing spectacle.

I bet rowing is more efficient, other than that, it looks hot to me, best for English weather?

Re: Harken Waterbug Challenge

I always thought these Waterbugs were an interesting design, particularly because I used to do a lot of bicycle touring. Many years ago there was an article in the old magazine Small Boat Journal.

I’ve only seen one on the water on the Severn River near Annapolis. It seemed to be better suited for flat water than open ocean. I’d be concerned about ventilation, limited stowage and buoyancy.

If you do launch this Waterbug let us know how your experience turns out. I still think this is an interesting and innovative design.
