When I got mine I was told that since the Rx lenses are clear I could get whatever tint I wanted. So you can get whatever darkness you want. A word of warning they told me was you can easily make them darker, but once the tint is on- you own it.

Cost me some major sucking up, but they sent them out twice to be tinted, without nicking me.

yeha snore. I hear ya. I'll have to check into your advice when I go in soon. I have the standard smokey I think right now, and its still too bright for me. Alas Maui requires you order lenses through them so limited on standard.

Googling around other suggestions above and trying to find local Optoms in my area, but Maui J's are good.

I've found that I need more than one pair.

For heavy duty in the sun work I have polarized glasses with an 80% tint in "Specsavers" frames. I find the 80% tint too dark for general use.

For more general use I have bifocals with a 60% tint in "Specsavers" frames. On a bright day I can wear these inside and outside.

I have found that even the 60% tint is too dark for inner city driving. I seem to loose my peripheral vision - nearly got cleaned up a few times so now I always use clear lenses in the early morning.

I have my designer frames with magnetic clip on polarised lenses that I had done while overseas for bugger all.
When on the water, I take off the clip on and put these polarised glasses from the Cancer Council over the top

I am not interested in fashion statements when on the water
and I dont cry when these go swimming or get stepped on.

Is the magnet on your glasses? If so, you should not use a handbearing compass while wearing them.

Polarized lenses may prevent you from being able to read some instruments, so not always recommended for boating, although they are the best lenses for reflected glare, such as you get from the water. Photochromic lenses, (photogrey, transitions ect) are very very temperature sensitive, and get darker in cold weather. Heat inhibits the darkening effect, usually when you need it the most. (Sounds odd, but if you keep your transitions in the fridge during hot weather, they will get much darker, at least until they warm up.)

I did skim the information, and, although difficult to say how much the spectacles contributed to the accident, if at all, it does reference the well known fact that acuities are reduced with tinted lenses, particularly at night. Even those well known "night driving" glasses are proven to reduce visual acuity, but persist because the yellow lenses create a false "brightening" effect leading many wearers to swear they improve night vision, when they do not. (they can reduce glare from oncoming headlights though) Photochromic lenses, especially Corning's "photogrey" also will remain darker and darker with time, until they remain at near sunglass densities even at night, and can create a significant reduction in night vision. The silver halide can be partially re-activated by a chemical tempering process, but plastic photochromics have largely dominated the market.
Again, regarding the accident, it is well within the bounds of possibility that with clear, anti-reflection treated lenses, the vessel may have been seen a few seconds earlier, and possibly with a different outcome.
