Getting to the Rio Dulce by Land

We are headed to join a boat on the Reo Dulce in November and sail it to Isla Mujeres. The owner suggested to fly to Cancun and take busses to Purta Gorda the a launch to Livingston. Has anyone done this? I would like some feed back.

Thanks Kevin

I assume you mean Rio Dulce, Guatamala. I have only done it by landing in Guatamala City and taking the bus. I can a long ride, esp. if your spanish is limited

Took nothing but busses and trains from Houston to the Rio Dulce (glutton for punishment!) it took 6 days but what a blast.
Why not fly into Guatemala City? did the owner specify a reason for Cancun? doesn't seem the best way to me, but maybe I am missing something. Also don’t forget that Livingston is still a good distance from the marinas, is the boat in Livingston or up the Rio Dulce? You could fly into G city then take the bus to Fronteras (spell?) and a water taxi to the boat, which would be much quicker.

Traveling in Central America is a breeze, go to any library and look up travel in the Lonely Planet. The people there love to travel and nobody can afford their own cars so public trans is great. I once crossed half of Panama the long way on busses faster than I could have driven. If you're going through Guatemala you may want to stay a few years to get to know the place.

Hi kevin,

This is what I did.

Flew to Guatamala City.

Stayed at Dos Lunas hostel, overnight. Close to airport and free pickup. Clean and cheap.

Taxi to bus station. There is a choice of three. Get there in the morning, 9am is perfect.

Tell your skipper to meet you in Bruno's bar at 5pm. Drink Florvde cana and coke.

Bought the tickets to Cancun. Since we are leaving the boat in Isla Mujeres, round trip tickets to Cancun are a heck of a lot cheaper then one ways to Guatemala City and from Cancun. Since the owner is going to be doing it a few weeks before we do he can tell us of any problems he has.

So far from what I have found there is a launch from Punta Gorda to Puerto Barrios daily and from Punta Gorda to Livingston only twice weekly??? If this is the case let me ask you all is bus or taxi service to Fronteras from Puerta Barrios easy to find.

Thanks
