Re: Getting into cruising with an exit strategy

When my wife and I started to discuss long-term cruising, one of her demands was that our home would always be available for us to return to so that she/we wouldn’t have to ‘couch surf’ when we went home to visit family and friends. Yes, the income from renting it out would have been very helpful but it was a compromise I was willing to make in order to get my wife’s buy-in to circumnavigate. Now, eight years later, we find that it worked out well and we’re looking forward to getting back to our home.

Fair winds and calm seas.

Re: Getting into cruising with an exit strategy

I hope everyone has voted over at my poll thread: Land home, yes or no? At this point the numbers are starting to lean strongly towards people keeping a land home vs selling it all:

Quote:
If you have gone cruising (past or present), did you sell your land home?
Yes: 43.93%
No: 56.07%
With regard to the question here, it is an interesting one, and something my spouse and I have lightly considered. And by that I mean, we’re more ignoring (or denying) the problem, than having any serious plans. We are in the “sell all” category, so we have no land home to go back to. If/when we give up the boat life we would have to look for very inexpensive land living.

Luckily, as long as you don’t need to live in a large urban area of the developed world, there’s plenty of inexpensive housing to be had. Even here in Canada, I can still buy a modest home for a few 10s of thousands. It just won’t be anywhere close to any of our large cities — which is just fine by me.
