Fun Book on Sailing

I happened to find this book while searching for another Dennis Lehane Book at the library last week

The book is called Before The Wind by Jim Lynch

It's about a family that owns a boatyard and that used to be great racers back in the day. They even raced the boat they built and sold

This book has lots of stuff in it we see here on CF every week.

Folks at the boatyard deciding to sail off into the sunset with zero experience. Folks fixin' up boats that probably should be taken to salvage, and others that spend 10X the amount of money needed to go sailing

There are customers that think they know more than the yard guys etc

The daughter in the family (besides dad and granddad) is the gifted racer. One son Josh, named after Joshua Slocum, is still repairing boats at the yard and races with his Star Sailboat weekly and is trying to find a girlfriend thru internet dating

The other son Bernard, named after Bernard Moitessier, is bit of a drifter and after getting in trouble with the police "borrowed" a Cal 36 and escaped to Mexico

The setting is Seattle

Re: Fun Book on Sailing

Thanks for posting -- I saw it was available in audio (I commute 3-4 hours a day, so live on audio books). Am looking forward to this one -- something to feed my geriatric wanderlust...

Re: Fun Book on Sailing

I think you'll like it and for the most part the family is still somewhat together off and on including granddad who they've always called Grumps.

The dad was a very good Olympic Racing Sailor and pushed all his kids hard to be great racers also, but it's mainly the daughter that's the natural racer even though she doesn't really care to be a great sailboat racer

The middle son mainly works at the boatyard as an adult and is a liveaboard, the older son sailed away after getting into some trouble......

Mom's a math genius almost........

Then there are the guys at the boatyard........

“In Before the Wind, author Jim Lynch tells the engaging tale of the Johannssens, a sailing family that's like a distillation of all the eccentric, funny and cranky sailors you've ever met. All too many writers have failed to convey both the technicalities and the spiritual joys of sailing in a manner that will engage the uninitiated without alienating the experienced, but lifelong sailor Lynch carries it off with this enjoyable read.” —Peter Nielsen, Sail Magazine
