One of the listings which is interesting if you're young and can totally disassemble the boat down to the inner hull to clean and dry it before rebuilding the interior.

The big problem I can see with this, is that he apparently doesn't have any insurance, and liability for ANYTHING that happens will be on you . . .

If you're going to try to refloat a sunken boat, I would think that anything that happens is going to be your fault because the other guys' mistake already went the full distance.

From what I see it's going to take a full dive to plug every throughhull and examine the hull to see if someone punched a hole in it somewhere. Once it's water tight again, some big float bags and a pump ought to get her up to the surface again. I think it was in a mythbusters episode where they pumped a sunken boat full of plastic balls and got it to float again. Once the decks clear the surface, all that's left is to pump the water out before hauling.

Either way, it'll need a full interior strip of every component and then fully cleaned to be sure that all the mold is eliminated once it dries out. At that point the rebuilding can begin. Total refit shouldn't cost more than 50-75 thousand if you do most of the work yourself but it'll be "brand new".

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Never seen an Edel 820 but I recall hearing good things about them. And that trailer looks to be in pretty good shape. The trailer alone could be worth $3K. Sure it needs a cleaning but that may be a good deal for someone with a vehicle to tow it. Fresh water boat, with a dinghy it looks like. The Volvo engine may need something, but given that it has been in fresh water, I'd think it may be ok.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Is there a thread about boats that are a joke in price?

I saw this on Sailboatlistings:

https://www.sailboatlistings.com/view/89090

On Boat trader they had the same listing, from the same seller for 50K.

A half sunk boat with a water logged engine that needs a total refit for 50k? *snicker* Good luck with that. That's a free boat if I ever saw one.

(Yes, I thought about putting this in the "new joke thread" but didn't.)

It is on a us treasury seizure auction which means someone really screwed the government out of a lot of tax money. I wouldn't touch it for more than scrap value .

As someone who has built a larger boat than this I can tell you that a person
would be much more ahead of the game starting with something like this than starting from scratch. So you chose to just buy a boat, that’s fine. But everyone doesn’t think like you or have the money. The mind is like a parachute, it has to be open to function.

The point is that the Gov want's 50K for it.

Do you know how much boat in the same basic size range you can get for 50K that ISN'T in that condition?

I'm looking at bigger boats because I'm going to need one. I've seen really nice and well cared for Formosas and Ta Chaios in the 100,000 - 120,000 range. What do you think it's going to cost to rebuild that engine and refit that boat after spending half of the same money you could have spent buying one of the Formosas/Ta Chaios I just mentioned? You think it'll be cheaper?

Free boats are often the most expensive boat you can buy. Add 50K on top of that and you're well underwater for what you get.

What the Gov wants and what it gets is two different things. I’m guessing that you hire out most everything concerning your boats.

1. The Government always gets what it wants. It may have to wait a bit until you accumulate more of what you think is "your stuff" before it becomes "the Government's stuff" but in the end, the Government always gets what it wants.

2. Unwarranted and unnecessary snark ill becomes anyone.

[/thread jack]

#1 highly unlikely the Government is going to ever get $50,000 for that boat.

#2. Not snarky at all. Most members on this forum would not take on a project boat like that and there is nothing wrong with that. A high percentage of members on this forum contract most of the work on their boats, also nothing wrong with that. Hull repairs and refinishing, engine repairs, rigging refurbishment is beyond the scope of most boat owners.

#3 passing judgement on a boat you’ve never seen is presumptuous.
