Re: FREE, or close to free!

At one point there were *five* Pearson 26 under $4000 near me, plus Boat Angel had a couple.

Gets so you could buy sight unseen just to get a motor, strip for parts.

When it comes to free boats or for that matter boats under say $10,000 like mine, one of the main costs is the storage or slip fee unless you already have a trailer and lots of acreage where you can store an old boat pretty much out of sight

My slip is $236.25/month ($2,835/yr), but I'll be pulling the boat in November and that will cost nearly $400.00 for the first month which includes the storage fee $8.00/ft, haul out $4.00/ft, power wash, $50.00, environmental $15.00 then storage $8.00/ft for three next 3 months then that jumps back up if I'm not through painting etc

As far as the Pearson 26, there's one right next to me that a guy bought this year for $3,700 or less. ($3700 was the advertised price) within a month the old two stroke outboard bit the dust and he bought a new 15 HP Tohatsu which was too big for the boat but the owner said he couldn't resist the price of $1,800.00

So his first year of ownership will be $2835 slip + $1800 new motor + the boat cost and he may have used the boat 6-8 times

It gets hard to know which way to go if you are trying to save money on a boat. I almost bought a Pearson 10M for $6,000, but it had a 43 year old gas engine (atomic 4) which might last 10 years more or 10 days more. This engine needed a water pump and the owner said he paid a small fortune for it. I priced one at Moyer Marine and it was $300.00. Then it needed a dodger, decent anchor, holding tank, depth finder, and an autopilot

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Yes I have access to plenty of rural land, why I focus on the trailer now.

Will not be paying slip / yard storage costs at all, except very temporary as really needed.

While out cruising on the water, avoiding marina like the plague, maybe a low cost mooring few months at a time, but mostly want to keep moving, live on the hook far from developed man swarms

Well then you are in good shape. Now you just need a trailer and something strong enough to pull the boat you buy.

As far as anchoring and being away, I enjoy it for a few days but when I get back, I really enjoy that too but then it's usually on a Sunday afternoon when there's no traffic.

I get to go home and take a nice bath, turn the A/C down to 78 or so, have decent food, watch TV and sleep without rocking, squeaks, and the anchor rope making noise

On my last trip the noises were minimal on the boat but to adjust to getting real sleep on the boat will probably take at least two weeks of constantly being on the boat

I sailed back about 35 miles on Sunday early am. I was headed SE and had a nice SW Wind around 14 - 17 knots (plus I had the tide) so I was back by noon and did get to see a nice sunrise. It was a fine sailing trip with nothing breaking.

I was running the autopilot, GPS, and depth on 11.7 volts though until the sun came up.....and my laptop which had run out of battery power. I was monitoring my Victron with it but remembered that the AC Inverter takes a lot of power so turning it off and the computer got the voltage up maybe to 11.9 Volts or 12. I didn't check it though because the boat was way heeled with all sail up and the decks and cockpit sole were wet (I was going by the percentage on my old analog Battery Monitor)

Oh man, it hurt me to do this, but I told the guy I couldn't take his boat after all. Not because it wasn't nice and worthy, it was the right boat at the wrong time in the wrong place. The gentleman truly just wanted the boat to go to someone that could keep it right, and I can't do that right now, I would be living hundreds of miles from the boat. Sure, I could've gone up there and got it, but when would I be able to go back, I had to ask myself.

He had no shortage of takers and I'm sure a local sailor, in a better situation to care for it, will get a good boat. And in my opinion, he is doing it right... He isn't letting the boat leave his slip uninsured with someone behind the wheel that will put on a beach if the breeze picks up, he's making sure his boat gets a proper owner.

It was a C&C redwing in Annapolis, but I can tell you it is no longer available and to email the owner would just be a bother to him.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

T30, $6k obo not exactly free but a lot of boat for the money. Atomic 4, galley, head, small cockpit, looking much cleaner than most of the FOCTF offerings.

Re: FREE, or close to free!

Strange, says he'd sell "the cradle" for $1200.

The cradle is on the trailer.

?

But yes, if you can get the lot for say $5K, you could give the boat away and still have a good deal.

Anyone in the northeast want to go halves, you get the boat I get the trailer?

Re: FREE, or close to free!

I took these photos at a marina near me last week. All of these boats (big orange X) are scheduled to be cut up. You can have one with the stipulation that you get it off the property within 48hrs. Each of these is the abandoned dream of some poor fool who though they could fix it up on the cheap and lost their shirts. They all now have outstanding judgements against them.

PS. I have another 22 photos but don't have the patience to upload them

I’m not ready for it yet but I hope springs eternal.
I like the size and low freeboard, cabin looks roomy, and I’m a tiller man.

I've found Craigs list to be the best. It's easy to use, and there's no rush to get to look at something. Personally, I'd NEVER bid on a boat sight unseen, so Ebay is out. Boat angel tends to get a lot of garbage... people just wanting to get rid of what they've got. I also do some good old fashioned foot work and will walk into marinas and head towards the back. Never know what you'll find.
