The men who sailed these ships were truly iron men. Coming back from Hawaii, at the northern edge of the arc one must sail, we had our woodstove burning 24/7 to keep the boat warm. These guys did it with no fires aboard ship in rough weather, which meant you got wet to the skin with salt water and had no way to dry out for days at a time. Yikes. Even the thought of it makes me shiver.
