Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
I always swim in a T-shirt. I’m not sure why you need special spf50 shirts.. I’ve never gotten even slightly tan where I wore a Walmart t shirt.

Sun Bum, and a big straw hat. Sun Bum is endorsed by the skin cancer institute or someone like that. It’s reasonably priced, isn’t greasy when applied, and smells awesome. I get it a local sporting good store but I think target actually carries it now .

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
CVS makes a zinc 50 spf sport sunblock that is reasonably priced. Zinc oxide is the preferred ingredient in sunblock. Other popular active ingredients in most sunblock can be unhealthy. google: cosmetic database for an extensive guide.

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
It’s relatively new information that some ingredients in sunscreen are really bad for coral reefs. Hawaii is in the process of banning sunscreens with the offending ingredients; here’s more info on the general problem -
https://www.badgerbalm.com/s-35-cora...sunscreen.aspx
I’m not affiliated with Badger; it was just the first easy google result that had good info.

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
Good info. The Oxybenzone that is harming the reefs is also believed by some to cause cancer and is in many many sunblocks.

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
former johnny Walker whiskey bottle filled with boiled coconut oil from john the lighthouse Keeper on Half Moon Caye, Belize, for a fist full of US dollars. Lovely stuff, sit in the sun and you slowly cooked like a pork sausage in a frying pan. Took some explaining to Customs when we got back in the UK as it had solidified in the cargo hold.

Blue Lizard - I have had a number of cancer patches removed before I started using Blue Lizard (recommended by my dermatologist). Pricy, but worth it if your life depends on it. I get it with coupons at Bed Bath & Beyond in the states

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
Not taking a stand either way, but it doesn't hurt to bring a little science into
it...

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
We started using Honest brand sunscreen, 30 SPF, when our kid was born, because it could be delivered along with all the diapers and wipes and other baby products. The wife tells me it has safer ingredients than others, I'm too lazy to verify her claim. None of us have had a sunburn since, no staining on any clothing or boat cushions.
The spray is thick and white and harder to rub in initially. It works very well and we hardly ever reapply unless we're in the sun for most of the day, even after swimming.

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
FDA advances new proposed regulation to make sure that sunscreens are safe and effective.
This significant action is aimed at bringing nonprescription, over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreens that are marketed without FDA-approved applications up to date with the latest science to better ensure consumers have access to safe and effective preventative sun care options. Among its provisions, the proposal addresses sunscreen active ingredient safety, dosage forms, and sun protection factor (SPF) and broad-spectrum requirements. It also proposes updates to how products are labeled to make it easier for consumers to identify key product information...

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
Just an update on this...
Sunscreens containing the below listed ingredients are now banned in Palau. The USVI and Bonaire ban goes into effect March 2020, and Hawaii in 2021.
Oxybenzone (benzophenone-3)
Ethyl paraben
Octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate)
Butyl paraben
Octocrylene
4-methyl-benzylidene camphor
Benzyl paraben
Triclosan
Methyl paraben
Phenoxyethanol
Personally I use a little zinc-oxide on face, a hat, and (now uv) long sleeved shirts when in direct sun, and time. I limit direct sun exposure and let my body produce enough melanin over time to protect itself.

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
Three popular sunscreen products have failed* an annual safety test, to measure their actual SPF, and UVA protection.
Sun cream sold by Asda, Calypso, and Bondi Sands* were among the items considered to be below the required standards, according to “Which?” [1] consumer group.
Tests carried out by the watchdog found that the products did not match the level of protection advertised on the bottle.
* The products which failed the tests were:
• Asda Protect Moisturising Sun Lotion SPF30 High
• Calypso Press & Protect Sun Lotion SPF30
• Bondi Sands SPF 50+ Fragrance Free Face Sunscreen Lotion

Re: Favorite Sunscreen ?
I made Tallow Sunscreen this year and it works great. Very moisturizing. Doesn't sting your eyes. And dogs like to like you.
