Re: Favorite sailing movie of all time?
Back on track to the topic...there is a movie I think it was Errol Flynn which featured a pirate masquerading as a captain in the Spanish Main. They sailed to California to bring supplies to a Spanish fort yet the real intent was to steal the boat and it's treasures, force the fort into capitulation, and to take control of the ship which came to save the fort from attack. The pirate (Errol) allayed all that if only for the hand of the beautiful daughter of a noble. She was pretty good with a saber. Anyway, the film, in full color, featured some real sailing in real ships although it was in the light winds commonly found off southern CA.
A damn fine movie. Swashbuckling, romance, betrayed romance, light hearted scenes, skullduggery, heroes and villains all in rich color.

Re: Favorite sailing movie of all time?
"Sandjeford - her voyage around the world."
From her refit in Durban harbour in the 60's, across the Atlantic to St. Helena, Barbados then through the Panama Canal to Galapagos, on to Australia and then back to Durban. They lost the mizzen in a knock-down in the Tasman Sea and removed her diesel engine in Australia becoming a pure sailing vessel for the crossing of the Indian Ocean.
I first saw the movie at a movie-house in Durban when I was about 7 or 8 years old then came across a hire copy on VHS in Toronto which I was able to buy as no-one had rented it in the previous two years.... :-D

Plus 1 for Riddle of the Sands, ahh Jenny Aguter, I'm still saving myself for her...
I was pleasantly surprised with Charlie St Cloud, there's some sailing, but a good tear jerker in other respects, Zac Efron (who is apparently a teen heartthrob) is surprisingly good.

You forgot Master and Commander, Wind, White Squall, and the made for TV series, Hornblower.
Enjoyed them all more than anything on the original list but liked the Hornblower series the best.

Re: Favorite sailing movie of all time?
I would have to vote for Dove. Not that it was a great movie, but that it was one of only 2 movies in my life that actually sent chills down my spine. I had just returned from cruising 2 years in the Pacific, in a boat only a foot and a half longer than Dove, and the opening scene of him at the table with the kerosene lamp swinging, and the wind in the rigging just had a great emotional effect on me. It took me right back to working out a round of stars by kerosene lamp. On another note, I grew up in a house where my dad almost always watched Adventures in Paradise. Maybe that is why I love big old schooners. On yet another note, The comment about Michner and Hyradahl, and the book FATU HIVA. I did the sail between islands that Hyradahl described, and the hike between the 2 villages that he wrote about, and came to the conclusion that he was full of sh%^. I never did do the trek to the east side of Fatu Hiva , so I dont know if that was a great exageration like the rest of his book. The book is a great read for anyone going to the Marqueses, but take it with a grain of salt. Just another of my opinions. _____Grant.
