Re: Favorite Destinations in the World List

We've only just begun full time cruising. So, we haven't been to any of the great and enticing places mentioned. From our limited perspective, the most exotic place we've been to has been the Dry Tortugas. Here's a photo taken from Fort Jefferson of our boat on anchor off Garden Key with Loggerhead Key and its lighthouse, about 2.5NM away, in the background. Discounting the ferry and two seaplanes out of Key West that tie up and beach, respectively, there's no industry in Dry Tortugas. The water is so clear, you can see the chain links in 8 feet of water. It was very cool that a four foot Wahoo took up residence next to our rudder while we anchored off Garden Key. For days, he was completely nonplussed as we got in and out of our dinghy at the stern.

Not sure I want to tell anyone...

We prefer coasts lined by temperate rainforest rather than tropical beaches. Heat is over-rated!

Same here! A little less than tropical is nice. Being too hot makes me stupid and lethargic.

We had a great time in Arcachon, France. The bay there is covered in oyster beds. We got a bushel of oysters and sat in the cockpit shucking oysters and drinking white Bordeaux...
They also have Europe's biggest sand dune.

Except the prevailing winds are from the West which means depending on the exact direction and conditions a lot of dirty air is coming from industrialized, densely populated areas in the USA and Canada.

Re: Favorite Destinations in the World List

Among the best sailing / cruising in the world is the eastern Caribbean.
You get steady breeze and very stable weather. Very rare thunder storms. The winds a almost always between NE and SE all the time. The only exceptions is when a tropical system comes through. And you get good warning on that and it is only typically during a couple of months a year. Windward of you. you have a couple of thousand miles of open ocean. Anchorages are plentiful and free! You can pretty much anchor on the west coast of nearly anything. The water and air are very clear. Once or twice a year you can get dust from accross the Atlantic but again this is rare and known in advance. Typical wind speed is 15 to 25 kts so great sailing often a beam reach. Pretty idyllic really. There is enough rain to fill your tanks in quick down pours. You rarely get all day drizzles. I can fill my 200 gal tanks in one good shower! Plus catch 10-20 gals in the dingy for washing clothes etc. good food is plentiful and relatively ok prices. A good amount of boating facilities and supplies as yachting is a major income for the locals. The boating communities and locals communicate Via many “cruisers nets” that are very helpful and friendly. Distance between islands are a day or over nites sail, not weeks as in the S Pac.

This area stretches from the Virgin Islands all the way to Trinidad and Tobago.
Trinidad is South of the hurricane belt.

What are some of you favorite destinations in the world?

As a side question, what destinations have the most and least particulate pollution?
For those who have cruised the Western Caribbean to a significant amount from the Bay islands(Roatan), to Cancun is that anyone's favorite or close to favorite?

Île de Porquerolles in France is very beautiful in the wintertime.
Here is a short video we made when we passed in October 2020.

Knysna lagoon, South Africa is lovely and protected, once you are through The Heads (the entrance from the Indian Ocean). Good shops; friendly yacht club; and Africa on your doorstep.

North Channel of Lake Huron, Great Lakes. Rated in the top ten places to cruise on earth. It is magnificent and you could spend all of many summers there. Add in Lake Superior and the Georgian Bay. Perfect.
