Question Enormous Yacht in Charleston City Marina

Does anyone know what vessel it is? I was there yesterday, and I stopped to take a look at the boats like I usually do, and there was this incredibly tall mast that just dwarfed all those around it. I think it had three foresails furled up, and five or six spreaders on the mast. I couldn't get close enough to see it with all the other boats in front of it (private dock). Just curious to know more about it.

It was tied up right about here: 32°46'34.3"N 79°57'01.6"W

Well, I'll answer my own question

It was M5 (formerly Mirabella V). At 254ft, the largest single-masted vessel in the world. It looks like she just left Charleston City Marina and is heading south. Amazing to see, even from a distance. I wish I could have gotten a closer look.

Re: Enormous Yacht in Charleston City Marina

It was in Newport late August - massive everything! It made the megayacht next to it seem like a dinghy! The hardware on that thing was insane...

It does 8 knots in 14 apparent, just like an old Catalina 36.

Due to the square cube ratio, as boats get bigger the requirement for size and or number of sails goes up tremendously.
One reason a dinghy can sail so well with so little sail.

I just want to see the keel on that thing. I can't begin to imagine what its draft is.

It's a lifting keel, 33ft draft with the keel down. It has a Wikipedia page.

I get it's over 200 feet, but holy cow that is a lot of draft.

Now what anchor does it have, how big is it, and how many guns on board?

A couple months ago in North Carolina or Virginia, the windage from this thing in a gale ripped out a floating dock.

It has 3.3metre draft with the keel up, so I'd call that a 7metre centreboard, rather than a lifting keel. I don't know if there's ballast on it though.

Re: Enormous Yacht in Charleston City Marina

I really wasn't going to tell anyone, but.....

Thanks to the MegaBall I'm a billionaire now, and that boat is coming down to Jacksonville so I can have it surveyed.

I'm not sure if it's the right boat for me.....
