English flagged yacht - change of ownership?

Hi,
Wanted to know if anyone has information about de-flagging an English boat and Re-flagging it in New Zealand?
Also is it possible to simply keep it under the English flag as a commonwealth citizen without living in England?

Any advise welcome!

Re: English flagged yacht - change of ownership?

When I bought my American Documented boat and re-flagged it to the Isle-of-Man, I had to prove I was a British Citizen, otherwise it would not have been accepted. Your boat should have it’s registration documents, so I would check if I was you, if you are not British.

Details of who can be the owner of a British ship ( no such thing as an english ship ) can be found on this form...

https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...ligibility.pdf

Simply being 'commonwealth' doesn't count but if you are or can be the holder of a British passport you would be OK leaving her UK flagged.

Re: English flagged yacht - change of ownership?

Confirming there is no legal English Flagged boats, if you are thinking of buying a boat with an English Flag check confirmation of register.
You probably mean British, but your lack of knowledge confirms you may not know that boats from Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England are all British.
I recently sold my British registered HR352 in Stuart Florida, the change of ownership to an American was done with no problems.

Re: English flagged yacht - change of ownership?

I think that you will find that if you wish to retain your new "pride and joy" on the British smallships register (SSR) one of the requirements is that the owner is normally resident in the UK for a minimum of 185 per year.
I know that as I just experienced that problem with a former co-owner.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for the information. We dug around and found some similar answers on the Web.
Will keep research and might have to go for another flag.

Cheers!

Belgium is popular with many Europeans wanting to avoid heavy taxes etc in their own countries.
