Have contract to purchase boat. Already have insurance survey lined up. Want engine and rigging checked also, but do not have any idea who to use in that area. Does anyone have any suggestions. Much help is much appreciated and thanking you in advance.

Not at all sure WHERE you want a surveyor, or what kind of boat, but I'll give you a generic answer.

Most riggers are set up to be able to give you a report on the condition of your rig. In the absence of specific local recommendations, I'd ask to see a copy of a recent report, and see if it meets your needs and expectations. Look at two or three of them, and the most professional will quickly become obvious.

Same with engine surveys. Call around to the local diesel engine mechanics and see who offers the service and look at sample reports.

Some options to find an engine and rigging surveyor:

1. Ask your marina neighbors who they use to perform marine engine maintenance and rigging.
2. Post same question on https://forums.sailboatowners.com/
3. Do an internet search on "marine engine mechanics near Chicago" and "sailboat riggers near Chicago" and pay a travel allowance like:
