Re: Do you pack ''HEAT'' while you sail?

My mother always taught me there are four subjects not to discuss in polite company:

1. Sex
2. Politics
3. Carrying weapons on board a cruising boat
4. Religion.

In all seriousness there are lots of posts on this subject if you do a search. \the generl consensus is it is a bad idea.

General consensus? Really? Have you read any of the threads on the topic?? I think this sounds more like your opinion than consensus. There is anything but consensus on this issue.

Lots of people carry them. It's a personal decision, and there are many factors which the OP can learn about using the search function. But it's a stretch to use the word consensus on this topic.

Here I thought from the header we were talking about High Explosive Anti-Tank.

Re: Do you pack ''HEAT'' while you sail?

This is disputed nearly as much as no of hulls and which anchor.

Most i have sailed with was a 50 Assault rifles 20 Submachine guns and 10 light machine guns , 25 years ago as a reservist on a ferry

or 10 years ago a few assault weapons and couple of harpoon and a selection of spearfish, i was just a passinger that time.

On my boat the only ordinance is distress flares.

Re: Do you pack ''HEAT'' while you sail?

Considering that the majority of Americans, mirror the gun habits of the majority of the world and choose not to own a gun, I'd say that the number of guns on boats very likely mirrors those habits - ie, MOST people aren't carrying heat, but a few are. In areas of the country with higher gun ownership rates, it would be reasonable to expect the rate of guns on boats to be at most, equal to - but likely lower than the habits of the local land population in the area. In either event, most people don't have guns aboard just like most people don't have guns on land. (Most meaning the majority as defined by the term majority)

I love these threads!

I had a bear sneak up on me last year so I plan on carrying a light 12 gauge to shore in more remote areas in the future.

Re: Do you pack ''HEAT'' while you sail?

guns on boats is an exclusively an American topic, and coincides with its national obsession. Outside of the US, with the exception of the military/law enforcement nobody carries firearms unless they are sailing to serious wilderness, i.e. wilderness that attacks you, not the Riveria or anything.

The hassle of declaring it, having it impounded and the general problems and suspicions it brings on you , makes it not worth while, not to mention the deep doodoo that results in you actually using it.

I have avoided discussing the moral reasons why carrying is a bad idea.

HEAP might be more appropriate for the recreational boater. I think the average HEAT round would penetrate both sides of most small boat hulls without proper stand off detonation of the conical charge and do minimal damage.
