DIY boatyards North Shore Long Island, west end

Looking for easy-going, inexpensive (for the area 8-), ideally not overly restrictive about "outside help" rules, maybe even allow camping on the boat a few nights at a time as I'm over an hour away.

Ideally close in as possible to Manhattan by ebike or public transport, but willing to drive if needed, go a bit further out to get more of the above.

If those criteria are just flat-out unrealistic, then alternatives in the region welcome, I'll move house if needed, but hopefully with a good school system for the kids. . .

I tried College Point and Morris Yacht Club, the problem is that they are small and have to take care of their own first so usually don't have time or room for outsiders though they are friendly and tried to help.....I went to Nichols in Mamaroneck, they are a public marina and very big,...three times I have hauled out there now over ten years.....not my catamaran (too wide) for the area lifts, a Lord Nelson 35 which I need to sell, at my age I can't maintain two boats

I've used College Point off and on for a decade for winter haulouts. Mirelos is correct that they have to take care of their members first, but if they have room they are great to work with. It's a totally DIY operation in terms of whatever work you intend or need, including antifouling prep and painting.

even more difficult now with my cat, I have to go to Georgetown Yacht Basin in Maryland, they are an excellent place, but it's a long sail and are in farm country

I spent several weeks at Shelter Island BOat yard and they let me do my own work. They would not allow me to touch the bottom and did send peopleI didn't ask for to do things to my boat. One of them sabotaged my autopilot Which I did not learn about until I was in the north Atlantic on my way to Bermuda so be careful if you use that yard.

Atlantic Highlands municipal harbor. DIY exclusively. They're strict on environmental rules. Seastreak ferry direct to Manhattan.

You might try Oyster Bay Marine Center. Its about a 40 min ride to Jamaica queens where you switch to the subway. 5 minute walk from train to boatyard.

I haven't dealt with them personally for over 20 years but back then you could do all the things you mentioned. They are friendly enough w fuel and free water fill up now buts that's the extent of my current knowledge.

Norwalk Cove Marina allows outside contractors so presumably you could be your own contractor (great prices hiring yourself!) and do your own work. But that's a hike from Manhattan.

Good 90min each way, and not North shore, but.

If you don't mind being all the way east Brewer Yacht Yard, now Safe Harbor Marina, in Greenport was very accommodating when I fixed all the blisters on the bottom of mine. They redid all the rigging as it was something I was not comfortable doing myself, but everything else short of painting the bottom they allowed me to do and would give some advice when I got stuck on a particular repair. They are not exactly cheap but I do know a few people that have camped out while on the hard there.
