DIY Boat Yards NYC, Eastern Long Island Sound?

After receiving a $4000 quote to do a haul and bottom job on my mono, I am looking for a normal do it yourself yard. It’s only a couple day job. Seems silly to spend $4000 on that.

Looking in New York City or eastern Long Island sound. Preferably extreme eastern Long Island sound.

Any suggestions on where you can do your own bottom paint in this area?

Yes. I just want a haul, blocking, power wash, then to do my own scuffing of the existing bottom paint, and then apply the new bottom paint.

I don’t need to sand off any great amount of bottom paint. Just scuff it up so the new stuff sticks. Typically I just do that by hand. With a block.

That actually doesn’t matter too much. I’d say west of Glen Cove in Long Island (but could be in CT) is probably best. The boat will be in the city for the winter. So the less time I spend heading away from the city the better. However, Connecticut or Long Island doesn’t matter at all. Crossing the sound is very quick down here where it is narrow.

Which is it? East or West? Try Manhasset Bay Shipyard. No personal experience, but a friend recommends them highly.

Mods, I don’t know what’s going on. I am sorry for making so many mistakes in one thread. Can someone please just delete this whole thing and I will start over?

There are some places on city island, I forget which one I used to go to for exactly that - a short haul to redo the bottom. But that was 10 years ago, before all the extra environmental regulations kicked in, now you’re supposed to vacuum up all your dust and not have any runoff into the sound.

That's everywhere, now. They sell vacuum collectors for most sanders these days, and you will be required by any boatyard to capture any flakes etc. with a tarp. Ask your yard about proper disposal. That might be the biggest issue.

We use Captain’s Cove in Black Rock, CT. Haul & wash shouldn’t be expensive. Get it done before winter haulouts start for the most scheduling options.

I'd check Great Kills harbor on S.I.. Although from pics it looks like they pack them in like sardines in a can today.

City Island should give you several choices of commercial yards and yacht clubs. At least 3 yacht clubs on the island haul boats for their members. Each has an active new member program.
