This makes no sense. He's looking for a DIY yard, not pay money to join a Yacht club.

Possibly, today that maybe to only route left. Basically being part of a corp. or LLC. Many have reciprocal agreements so it may be the cheapest route to go when cruising in the US. It's strength in numbers.

Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor, great DIY yard. Ask to be put in the row with the commercial boat haulouts, you'll have tons of room to work.

Same here, the people are great and the yard is not pricey.

It would make sense if you talked to the clubs. Sometimes if they have extra capacity you can make a short term deal as a non member or member with limited privileges. The members do a lot of work themselves to keep the costs down. The members own their individual moorings and the clubs provide launch service.
All in it can be a more economical year round way have a boat with the usual bar, restaurant, and social as a plus.

Morris Y.C., tip of City Island can haul any size boat and allows one to do their own work as long as you follow established environmental rules for New York, i.e., tarp under boat to catch scrapings. Oother than that you can do yor own prep. Usually allow non-members to haul after members haul. Friendly yard.
