Dirtier Boats Due to Western Wildfires

Finally some nice weather for sailing this weekend not raining. Went down to check the boat itís filthy. I donít remember the boat getting this dirty in 2weeks. We had a few days of Smokey haze here in upstate NY due to wildfires out west.

Is it possible the western wildfires made our boat dirtier than normal?

Anyone else notice dirtier boat than normal?

If it is ash, blast it with fresh water. Ash tends to be greasy, and if you rub it in, hard to remove.

Try being in the West. Burned, half-burned, and green fir needles raining on the deck in 90į weather = tar.

Given sand from the Sahara made all those lovely beaches in the Caribbean you could be right. We have had high pressure for a fortnight in the UK and the solar panels keep getting covered in dust, so output noticeably drops.

Just be lucking your boat is on th east coast. When we have fires in California the ash that falls miles form the fires can really make the boat topside a cleaning nighmare.

In Bonaire, gritty fine dust blown from the roads every morning
In Jolly Harbor, Deep Bay, Antigua- ash from the burning dump on bad days
St Lucia, volcanic ash

Re: Dirtier Boats Due to Western Wildfires

Various weather sites and news sites have said some haze is from the fires, so it seems very possible. When I was at Lincoln Harbor in Weehawken, the tunnel traffic was the source of a lot of dirt. The marina was right next to the Lincoln Tunnel exit and as you are likely aware, the tunnel traffic was most often heavy. This resulted in a lot of cleaning to the boat! If I didn't give it a good wash once a week or so, it really showed.

Warms my heart to see that our current first world problems have become how dirty our boats are and not the world pandemic, world shortages, unemployment, politics, economy, closures, etc.. LOL

Lets hear it for getting back to normal.

Trylmedic, thanks for that map. Interesting. Yupper other world problems are way more important.

During the COVID pandemic we did not see our granchildren for 7 months. First time out on the boat with our grandchildren since COVID started. Our 12 YO Grandson got the vaccine but my 10 YO granddaughter has yet to get the vaccine. So we still have to be careful for her.

Re: Dirtier Boats Due to Western Wildfires

Just got a bunch of gray streaks all over my boat after a hard rain here in michigan. I had just washed it, so there should have been anything on the cabin top to run down over the sides of the cabin.

Oh, it'd be great if they'd rinse off. Boat soap doesn't really cut it either. I get it off with Collinite 920 cleaner, followed by a re-wax. Ugh.

A boat cover of some type might help.
