Question of the day...

So I am looking for an indestructible (or closest to) and water resistant portable two way radio solution for multiple purposes.

1) I want my kids to have something to play with

and

2) I would love for them to serve well into the future for excursions for when the kids are big enough and on little "adventures" when we make the move to a live aboard, we have a way we can all stay in contact without the need of cell phones

and

3) I would like them to be able to dial up common marine freqs

I keyed in on these - DEWALT DXFRS80

The price point seems right for what I am looking for but will these satisfy #3?

Thank you in advance!

Contact me if you want to buy all my old FRS radio stuff - I think I even have an FRS base station to set up at home so you can monitor what the kids are up to. Cheap - I’m not going to save them for grandkids. When they get older, buy some waterproof handheld VHF sets and teach them proper procedures and courtesy. It helps if your kids need help in a foreign port where there is a community of cruisers monitoring marine VHF channels.

To the best of my knowledge, Dewalt doesn’t make VHF (or any other) radio.

It shouldn’t be difficult to determine the actual manufacturer to find if it is a reliable but more expensive re-brand and then you will know if it will be reliable.

Re: Dewalt Two Way Radio - for marine use?

First thing I would recommend is that you enroll in a radio operators course. It's an education that everyone holding a marine radio should get. Here in Canada it is illegal to transmit without the license. It's not enforced but definitely should be. Took part in the delivery of a small ferry just yesterday and the wrongful use of radio is rampant and therefore confusing to those trying to do things properly.
