dangerous ? key stuck in panel
Appreciate any help.
My engine key is stuck in the panel.
Is there any danger to just let it be ?
Thanks
Archie

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
Why not simply remove the lock and replace it?
There is nothing unique to any lock and same size replacements are ubiquitous in most parts of the world.
It's probably less cost than a small fender.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
It is not a lock.
It is the switch that turns on the engine. Left to heat glow plugs then right to start engine.
I could try to replace the switch but if there is no danger then I am inclined to leave it alone.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
No dangers of an electrical nature other than forgetting to turn it off, maybe.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
A lot easier for some stupid teenager to start the engine.
When I was 14 some friends and I were messing with old construction equipment. Got a bulldozer running. It sat there a ran for four days over a holiday weekend. We never did figure out how to operate the thing. Point being, makes it a whole lot harder to mess with without a key in it.

It means you can't lose the key
Not a problem if you are not worried about intruders starting your engine.

That's why fire engines don't have an ignition key.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
I think I'd add a kill switch, a hidden toggle switch that removed power from the ignition switch.
Seriously doubt any thief would find it. When I ordered a spare for my Yanmar I found out what I had suspected, for all the boats in the world with a key that looks like a barrel, a cylinder, there is only that one key that fits all of them.
Not very secure is it

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
Had a dockmate with twin Yanmars in a sportfisher who said "Can't start my port engine because the ex-wife threw the key overboard !" So I started his port engine for him with the key labeled "starboard".

I'm not even sure if our key can still be removed from the ignition. I've never pulled it out!

Yep, my two Belize keys fit the Farr 1/2 ton switch ( and they are over 20 years apart in age).

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
I only take the key out when I lay the boat up. Stays there for six months.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
Seven years onboard, I've never taken the key out of the switch.
I just tried, it won't come out. lol. Oh well.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
We don't even have a key! Just a pushbutton start, glow and stop setup. I reckon that the chances of a benevolent stranger being able to drive my boat out of danger someday outweigh the chances of a bad guy stealing the boat. YMMV.

Re: dangerous ? key stuck in panel
You might accidentally kick it, & break it off if it's down low.
