On average when you cast off the lines and head out, you can reasonably expect to shed about a third or more of your current costs as a "static live-aboard" (living/working on land but sleeping/eating on the boat).

Whether you can maintain the $500/month cruising budget is a matter of self-discipline and circumstance. If your actual income (after taxes, etc.) is more than the mythical $500/month there is a powerful influence to fulfill the saying - "How much does it cost to cruise? Whatever amount of money you have." On the other hand if you only have $500/month then you are more or less forced to live on it and make whatever adjustments to lifestyle necessary to make it work. When that time comes the trick is to find a cruising mate who also can share that frugal a lifestyle - or has significant resources of their own.
Thanks osiris I appreciate that.

Just for the record, I wrote that last post after a little too much rum last night :/

Little too bored lately

Yeah, nice blog - honest and self aware ..............and that's a nice foldable workspace next to the Galley .

Not so sure that having curtains will meet Indy's approval .........even if your dock neighbours are happy .

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

the curtains came with the boat, as well as the new cushions One of the many benefits of buying used

That pic was back when I first bought the boat. I have a different stove now, and there's a half-ton of junk sitting on that table at the moment. It is a good workspace... The cabin table is also covered with stuff I guess I'm not much of a housekeeper Maybe I'll pull the old camera out again soon...

Also, osiris, yeah I'm definitely open to finding that cruising mate to share my experiences (and expenses!) with But it is a trick isn't it? Not many american girls are willing to give up their luxury... maybe I'll find her down in the DR or Guatamala, Brazil, Cambodia...who knows

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

So far read the first 20 pages of this interesting thread.

Question. Regarding food, does anyone like to sprout their own ming beans etc? What experience do you cruisers have with this, or any other innovative gardening type things. Ried Stowe ate a lot of sprouts on his 1000+ days at sea "mars oddysea"

There are many sections to CF including one dedicated to food and provisioning. For bean sprouts see:

I was gonna let the roe post slide but the rupiah is like 9100/usd.

So the 500 a month cruiser is in fact a millionaire in Indonesia...

Problem in the Dominican Republic is there are too many choices of willing women. Here is an example - she works in the Luperon Puerto Blanco marina:

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

You guys think that the Cruising Forum is an all boys club with your talk about finding nice subservient women in the DR or Thailand, or deeply-indebted-to-their-plastic-surgeons grammas in Brazil?

You know there are some sailing women around here who choose to sail solo because exactly because men think like that.

The likelihood that you are going to find a gorgeous younger woman from any country who will think you are always right and will be willing to live on $500/month -

is about as likely as it is that I am going to find a man who loves to sail as much as I do, has an income of $500/month to add to the cruising kitty, can fit all his gear into a duffle bag, and is willing to let me be the captain. :-)
