You need to give time between steps, 24 hours was recommended but if you are starving you might have to shortedn the timeline.

Test kits for mercury, misc heavy metals bacteria etc are available on line a relatively inexpensive

I suspect your survival course taught that you could go for up to 30 days without food but only 3 days without water.
In a survival situation, food should not be your first thought; water, shelter from elements and a way to keep either warm or cool depending on the situation.

Yup...I agree with first hand experience. And you know where those rumors are started!

It would not be as modest and would not have taken as long (three years and a lawyer) to get had it not been for all the people that are trying to cheat the system. Back benifits (after lawer fees ) paid for the boat and $1000/month is not enough to live comfortably while land based but will make a comfortable cruising budget.
This thread will help me to live a comfortable lifestyle as well as to provide someone the opportunity to share it.

I don't think anyone is capping on you for a legitament need for support. I just get sick of the folks 200+ lbs. overweight crying they can't work but won't change. Or the welfare mom that pops out kids like it was a production line.
I admire you for following your dream and you should. Here in the SF bay area, there is a place called Richardsons Bay where all kinds of derelects 1/2 float in the anchorage. They suck the system dry while raising their freedom flag. The bottom of the anchorage is littered with their engine block anchors and human waste. What image do you think they are painting for any free spirited voyager who wants to anchor out for a week?
By the way DOJ...I was generalizing about Thailand. Yes...it has a lot of problems. But remember it is a 3rd world country that is making headway in terms of health and politicaly too. As you know DOJ there are vendor/sellers on the streets with their carts who are deaf. They make a living and make their life work. That's what I admire. Here in the US, that would not be the case.
On top of that Thailand not having a welfare system keeps families closer than it would otherwise. But that would be terribly off topic.

Re: From Working to Cruising & Back Again.....
Right on Brad!
The problem is that many people on welfare are using it as a hammock. The two I know who use welfare have ruined their lives with drugs or alcohol so now they are "disabled." So disabled that we have become the enablers that are perpetuating them to be do-nothings. True parasites of society. Our society is also to blame for allowing unlimited entitlements.
We will once again be given a choice this year of what direction we shall go: individual achievement or individual entitlement. We will all get what is coming to us if we vote the latter.

Those things are provided as a safety net not a damn hammock. It is a large part of what is wrong with this country today.

A sign of the Apocalypse: DOJ is now referring to himself in the third person. We are all doomed to cruising on $500 a month. The money to balance out should come from those berthed in Sausalito and go to the poor struggling liveaboards in Richardson Bay.
BTW, per Wikipedia (my Bible), "Boating in Richardson Bay is limited to small sailing craft and kayaks due to limited draft available, and the bay is closed entirely for several months of the year to provide protection for the ecological system." Is this the rose-colored view? I haven't seen the area in many years.
Edit: note careful redirection of thread back on course.

Part of cruising on $500/mo is choosing your cruising grounds, limiting restaurants and other such extravagances not only makes this possible but makes such things a special treat...going out every night gets old after awhile.
