Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

i have also found food here in mazatlan already cooked , with quart sized yummy drink, for less than 5 dollars per day. this rocks!!!!!

but my boat will never be shiny nor will it ever have some things many folks with money have, either. what it didnt come with i cannot use. i can update over time but.....

I could manage on $500... easy

they just dont have a sail maker in mazatlan--they DO have upholstery shops.....
A friend had to have his jib put back together in Luperon. Cost him $75 for a first class job, and it was done overnight. Sewing machines like the Sailrite sailmaker are sold in HongKong and Vietnam to the local tailors, and are available there for a fraction of the US price.

For example, I bought 5 pairs of Bausch & Lomb aviator sunglasses for $7.50 each in China. They were the official ones. In Australia/NZ Harken blocks and fittings are available for 40% of the US price.

You can get things done overseas. You must shop around.

you been doing htis also, vv????? you sound so good at total duckie usage.... dont forget the pillow feathers.....

here there are upholstery shops. they will stitch sails and canvas for cheap. glue works on sails--so does sail tape. the tabs do need to be stitched, however....i heard one quote of 30 dollars--i must investigate this..sounds too good....

Not really! Time is only money is you can sell your time. Time you use for yourself or for non-economic purposes is "free." As is "what do you do with your free time?"
- - You can pay somebody like a broker to find your boat for you or you can look yourself in your "free time."

INDY
Indy, could you please name this source? My experience of pricing Harken in Oz is not the same, and I would be grateful for the info.

So would nearly every other person buying marine parts in that overpriced country.

Thanks,

Jim

There ya go. Bigger than a Dana and a whole lot cheaper.
I saw an ip 31 for under 20k recently, but I can't find it now. They're out there...

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

The July issue of Latitude 38 has an article entitled The Cost To Cruise, as well as responses in the Letters section.

http://www.latitude38.com/eBooks/2011/L38201107.pdf

A few folks were pulling it off for $500/month or less, typically in tropical, less-developed countries.

Re: Cruising on $500 per Month . . .

is not difficult to live on less than 500 dollars per month once outside usa and usa pricing---it doesnt follow ye to pair a dice-- pricing in usa is on its way to being way out of control and is only gonna get worse.
