Re: Cruiser Dating?

Judging by the amount of single guys I survey yachts for I would say finding the right lady is going to be hard work.
A good attitude, some honesty and personal hygiene goes a long way.
Also find any female who will give you an honest opinion about your yacht interior. Some decent upholstery, cushions, nice plates and cups, and a clean interior goes a long way.
The tom boy thing is interesting, none of the female sailors I know are what you call girly girls.
Cheers

It depends on what one wants. It's a lot harder to find someone to navigate the Beagle channel in Patagonia than to find someone pleasant to look at with a positive attitude. Actually it's easiest to find someone unpleasant with a rotten attitude who'll make your life hell, but we won't go there, will we?

Many cruising women in a relationship I know are less tomboy but more the classical housewife type: Practical, level-headed, willing to do even shitty work when necessary and focussed on making the life on the ship pleasant and easy. The pampered princess type doesn't work on small cruising boats for very long. Either they start pulling their weight, thus becoming less pampered or they seek greener pastured for the attention they know they deserve. The above is independent from the looks. There are stunning housewifey types and a ton of very unattractive pampered princesses.

The few solo sailor ladies I know seem to be more the tomboy type.

Well, of course this is true! How could the "pampered princess" survive as a solo sailor with no one to pamper her, or fix the engine or clear a clogged head or whatever needs to be done?

Ann and I have met a good few solo ladies and they have all been outstanding people, some "tomboyish", some more feminine, b ut all self reliant and capable and worthy of admiration.

I met a guy at an Old Gaffers rally. He commented 'My wife threatened "it is the boat or me." Welcome aboard'

Re: Cruiser Dating?

I posted a singles ad for a hot chick, who enjoys frequent sex, prefers the overnight watch shift. And is a decent diesel mechanic.

No hits yet, but I’m a patient man.

:-)

(In the meantime I’m saving up for a new, 45’ catamaran.. That should change my prospect considerably.)

Re: Cruiser Dating?

I for one would love to find an old salt to hang out with on his old boat. No youngster and no fancy show off stuff...just a gentle, old, man of wisdom, life experience, and intelligence, low key, and cuddly. That's it. I've been around the block, can cook, and pull my share of work but my hopes are not high...I'm a rare bird. My life in my lil RV and nomadic lifestyle is good enough and I keep it adventurous and simple.

Find a 'nice woman' elsewhere than the sailing community, but be upfront that sailing is where it's going....and keep trying till you find one that will put up with you..!!

Re: Cruiser Dating?

Spring Fever I think you forgot to mention they must be handy rolling on antifouling as well. I think hot is pushing your luck, you could say your happy with an 8 if they meet the other requirements!
Maybe the reason there are lots of single male sailors is in the link below?

Re: Cruiser Dating?

It's simple, guys. You need to make it fun for the women. If they have a good time with you, they're likely to want to come back; if not, well, then not.

I do agree 5yr. old never washed underwear would be a turnoff, though.

Re: Cruiser Dating?

Well, let's see here.....
In the 40 odd years I've been bopping around, I've come across my fair share of singlehanded dudes....
Starting at the top.....
Usually seen with a bandana ( hasn't been washed in a year), a floppy straw hat (that looked like it was just fished out of a dumpster) or a baseball cap ( near the end of it's 50 year life._
Red, sun blotched skin, usually long and scruffy, and often balding, but regardless, hair that hasn't seen shampoo in six months)
As above, a nose that has seen more than it's fair share of sun....
A beard is almost mandatory for a singlehander.....these come in every shape and color known to man, none of which have been manicured in 6 months.
Diluted eyes, from excessive rum and cokes..
A t-shirt, badly in need of being disposed off in the nearest trash can.
A variety of faded tattoos in a variety of areas....
A belly that protrudes like a bulb on a ship....
Shorts held up by a piece of rope, no underwear off course....
Legs that have seen more than their allotment of cuts, scrapes, etc...
Hands, usually with oil and grease under each fingernail....but nevertheless, firmly wrapped around a rum and coke drink....or warm beer....you choose...
Onboard to be found barefoot, but has been known to wear flip flops when hitting area bars. Often noted with a lingering fish smell or diesel oil.

Oh yeah, a real chick magnet......

I don't know many, if any, sailors like this.
