Ping, if I had been pissed, I might well have used stronger language!

Jim

PS I apologize about the incorrect usage of "Straits". Bad me...

Jim, could it be that someone else was perhaps "pissed" when he posted ?
BTW, love the input from Anne and yourself.

'Pologies accepted.... I have always called the bit between Italy and Sicily the Straits of Messina but I see that it is actually the Strait of Messina.

Re: Crossing Bass Strait Australia in Beneteau 42 Yacht

I've only been on Bass Srait once. Strangely I found myself in dire straits, which is where the plural comes from.

At the time I wished I did have a trailer sailor because it would have been on the trailer, and by logical extension I would have been in my dear old 89 Range Rover listening to dire straits rather than puking over the side between trips below trying make any one single bit of the electrics work.

So to the OP, have fun, read all the advice, accept that you will make it safely if you follow the advice, and take lots of whichever medication gives you the best results for sea sickness. Bass Strait has the messiest wave cross hatching I have ever met or hope to meet again.

No mate. They figured there was no point in setting one up when you sailed straight past.

Well, there was a place you could have had a drink there a few days ago... 'cause Insatiable II was anchored there overnight. We do have some standards about guests aboard, Boatie, but we'd relax them for you!

From what I hear of that anchorage, the drinks would have been shaken, not stirred.

Re: Crossing Bass Strait Australia in Beneteau 42 Yacht

Slayon,
Did you purchase the Beneteau and did you cross Bass Straight yet? Ive spent a bit of time there and it can be a particularly unpleasant place if your timings wrong. I once recorded 90 knots, just before the wind gear got blown off the top of the mast. A couple of things to note:
choose your weather window carefully
Refuge cove at Wilsons Prom is the best anchorage on earth when Bass Straight has been kicking the **** out of you
Its easier to time your arrival at Port Phillip heads from the Prom than from Devonport.
You Must only cross the Rip at Port Phillip heads at Slack water or just as it starts to run in. If you are having a horrid time in Bass Straight then the rip will probably kill you if you cross at the wrong tide.
PS My uncle crossed Bass straight in an 18 footer and a mate of mine paddled across in a sea kayak (both are lunatics though)
