contacting a sailing vessel

How do I go about contacting a sailing vessel? I live in San Francisco area and want to contact s/v Barracuda, a new Chris White cat commissioned in Valdivia, Chile. I am very interested in talking with the owners about their ketch rig with no real mainsail and feathering sticks. I am fascinated.

Okay, but in general, if you wish to contact a s/v somewhere on this planet how does one go about doing that from a land base? Is there some sort of common way to do that?

Is it just an internet web page that cruisers use to check in and out of? I am totally ignorant of this. I just need some direction. tx

Re: contacting a sailing vessel

There is really no specific way.

If you know where the boat is moored you can call the harbor master and leave a message for the owner, or send a letter.
All depends on the willingness of the vessel to be found. If they have an ais transponder you can see where they are, but you still need to do the legwork to contact them.
When I take off on the boat I make it a point to not broadcast my whereabouts, it's more peaceful that way.

If it's the Chris White design that interests you rather than s/v Barracuda in particular, check out Escape Expeditions

They have a blog and you can probably get hold of them through the comments.

I'm also very intrigued by the design. Ah, if only I had a spare $M.

Hey,

Try by internet on Marine Traffic to locate the name of the yacht by her AIS signal, when available!

Re: contacting a sailing vessel

Do you know the country in which Barracuda was registered? If so, try the ship's registry for that country.

I am sure you can rent a skiff and go out to the boat; but DON'T BOARD unless they are present and welcome you aboard.

Re: contacting a sailing vessel

pwillems, thanks for the heads up on that blog. It is exactly what I was looking for. Have you read the guys reports on this boat? He is very detail oriented type of writer. Found tons of useful information and he is in Oxnard California. So should be able to locate him pretty easily. tx you..

ps..he does lots of videos on most points of sails in some pretty good wind and sea states. Which is exactly what I wanted to know about this type of rig.
