connect standard horizon GX2200 to openCPN

Wonder what other people are using to connect GX2200 to openCPN other than cables from milltechmarine.com ?

Their cables are 35 dollars and 50 dollars. Wonder if there is something cheaper ?

Re: connect standard horizon GX2200 to openCPN

to a laptop computer? I have used a nmea0183 to usb cable to attach numerous 0183 devices to a laptop before. unsure if i got it from milltech or elsewhere.

I currently have my 2200 connected to my NMEA2000 network using a milltech cable for AIS.. works great!

If you get a $50 cable that works.. that will likely be the least expensive thing you buy for ANY boat!

Same cable here as at Milltech for $23.50. Follow instructions on the Milltech page.

It works w/our OCPN running on windows and linux (Rpi).

Cheers,

Much cheaper on ebay/amazon.
The ones using FTDI chips are generally considered better though I've not really had any problems with the prolific ones.

Yup - any old USB to serial cable and solder some DB9 connectors to the radio side. These things are cheap if you shop around.

I thnk the whole setup cost me less than $15 for the two cables and connectors I needed. for a GX2100. Since the GX2200 already has the GPS, you only need one cable from the radio to the computer.

Re: connect standard horizon GX2200 to openCPN

I just added AIS to my laptop using a VHF antenna splitter and a dAISy 2 receiver using a B cable. However as my laptop does not have GPS I added a GPS dongle for that. Does the USB directly to the standard horizon carry the GPS as well as the AIS signals or are you folks using computers with built in GPS? USB cable cost me under $5 for 15' with variety of plugs to choose from. https://www.monoprice.com/myaccount

I used the Milltech cable:
USB Breakout Cable

... works great... was worth piece of mind for me to be able to just follow this tutorial:
Using Coastal Explorer and the Standard Horizon GX2200

...and use a cable from a reputable vendor.

Re: connect standard horizon GX2200 to openCPN

The Milltech cable uses the FTDI chipset. So does the one previously mentioned upthread from DigiKey ($10 less than the Miltech). From Amazon or Ebay you can get one for <$10 - usually with a molded DB9 attached. The prolific chip ones are even cheaper - they work fine too. Everybody that uses the ubiquitous BU353 GPS puck already has the prolific drivers installed 'cause that's whats in there.

I liked having the connectors on the back of the radio, so I was fine with using the DB9s.
