Reflection. Maybe reflexes.. know rest. Quick hands making lighter tensions on heavy braces.
Experience. Strength to learn practice earlier. Bitter rests.
Imitation has me thinking though. Most people see a
head sail as a pointing sail yet a main sail points much better. Unfortunately being such a large fixed luff, force of
wind disturbance knocks us away from true thus aid of spear with headsail protects of sail of much higher pointing ability.
Weird thing is that to point high could be best achieved by using a high pointing headsail but we have no way of bracing tack of such without a yardstick or similar. If we used a yardstick, we might as well square the sail and achieve efficiency aswell as point.
Golden era of sailing since past courtesy of steam then
diesel. Gone are hard courage days of surviving seamen showing nearer true point of sail.
Because nowadays we can reef and iron sail beat whereas they couldn't. Stiff breeze into Gale then beyond would stiffen up yardstick to stable eye a point of an extremely true reach.
Confused seas say safe man is reaching higher ground.
