Cockpit table

My boat has an Edson cockpit table that I can sort of…force onto the pedestal and it works out ok but only because the few remaining screws slop around in worn out screw holes. I’m pretty sure that’s not what the original design intended. Here’s the 2 brackets that are loosely attached…

How is this supposed to properly work?
I will likely turn it into a quick drop table but first I need to know the original design. I tried the Edson website but didn’t see these.
Thx much.

Re: Cockpit table

A photo of the table itself with the brackets attached would be more helpful. It looks like those brackets would be for a table that is mounted permanently - not one that drops out of the way or is removeable. Forcing it onto the pedestal could be what is loosening the screws. You could also try calling Edson to ask them.

Re: Cockpit table

Those are brackets for the table extension. The flip up cockpit table is attached to the binnacle with a hinge to support the aft end and arms that support the forward end when it is up and in place. The table has a fiddle on both sides and the forward end. The table has optional leaves that attach to each side of the table. Your bracket is one the is screwed to the leaf and the hooked end sets over the fiddle on the table and loosely attaches the leaf to the table. We had that table on our previous boat. I will post a picture if I can find one.

A picture would be great. This is the table that I have. There are no other parts nor any evidence of a hinged attachment point. Previous owner had those brackets loosely attached to the underside of the table such that the curved parts would grip the pedestal tubing. It works but isn’t correct and won’t last.

Re: Cockpit table

I just happen to have one of those tables sitting next to me in my office (brought it home to refinish it). I'm not sure that it will work as a drop-down table - but it might. You'd have to mount some sort of attachment block to the pedestal guard and replace the current brackets with something like drop-down shelf brackets if you wanted to make it a drop-down. The open semi-circular parts of the current bracket slide down the pedestal guard (like some of those glasses/binocular holders we see) - it's not a permanent table. You just lift it off when you want to. See the photos (below) for how it works.

Gotcha. Makes sense now. Will head to the drawing board and figure out how to improve what we have. The prices on the Edson website are kind of shocking…not gonna lie. Thx for the pics.

Re: Cockpit table

Photo not mine but this is what I have. The brackets are sturdy and there is a supporting leg on my table not pictured here.

Re: Cockpit table

That’s exactly what I want. The table could be hinged leaving the drink / binoculars holder available at all times. So the table would not be in the way while underway. I will definitely plagiarize this design.
Thx.

Re: Cockpit table

I have the same table and the same brackets. That should drop in easily over the pedestal guard. Sounds like someone mounted the brackets too close together. Just move them outboard a bit.

Re: Cockpit table

This was what kept me from seeing the obvious…wind speed / direction indicator mounted above the main instrument bracket.

Yup, however they are one of the few steering equipment manufacturers still in business...

Re: Cockpit table

While plagiarizing the design add two leafs that fold over the top from each side. Put fiddles on the top side and a slide out brace on the bottom. This makes for a small table with fiddles or a much larger one for calm times at anchor. Use piano hinge for the leaf. I also have a support leg that is hinged on the bottom of the forward part of the table and at its midpoint that folds out of the way when the table is stowed. Stole the design and made my own out of scrap. Holding up well

Re: Cockpit table

Some years back I was going to make my own but found lightly used teak one on craigslist for around $100. So I figured it was definitely worth it. Later on, when I had a second boat I came across a very similar table for it, also on craigslist, for all of $50. But that one was not teak and somewhat heavier. And painted with plastic type paint but seems more robust than teak one so I'm keeping it as a possible spare.

But yes, they're easy to put together if one is reasonably handy.
