CNG stove

I've just run out of cng on my sailboat. Does anyone know where I can refill, or exchange, my bottle in coastal Texas? I'm beginning to feel like Don Quixote, chasing windmills

Re: CNG stove

Wish I could help. I know Port Aransas, my father inlaw was and my brother inlaw is a harbor pilot there, and I can't think of a source.

CNG has a real advantage over LPG, in that it doesn't accumulate in your bilge and go BOOM, but it has the disadvantage of very restricted availability relative to LPG. It may be time to consider changing the jets in your stove, but wow, that's not something I'm going to recommend.

Re: CNG stove

That’s the problem with CNG. Try filling in the Caribbean. Might as well be looking for plutonium. Can you get alternate orifices and use propane?

Re: CNG stove

People report good results with going to the nearest CNG based transport company, usually some local bus fleet or similar.

I haven't had the need for that since there are 3-4 yards in the area exchanging CNG for a company in RI. A bit more expensive than priced at RI as they have significant delivery cost but driving 1+ hour to RI would consume more gas and time than its worth.

Just google CNG based transport in your area.

Re: CNG stove

Outside of a relatively few places in the US, CNG is by far the safest stove fuel of all. Safer than propane, safer than kerosene, safer than alcohol, safer than electricity.

Because you can not blow up your boat with an empty cylinder. Dinner tends to be served a little cold though...

Re: CNG stove

The Harbormaster recommended that I rejet. But that's definitely not happening. My quest continues

It is especially cold if you can’t get fuel. It’s difficult enough to get CNG in the US. Impossible in the Caribbean and probably most third world places. The hoops are complicated enough for propane in some places.

BTW in Trinidad we paid $3 US for #20 Tank fill of their gas mix at the refinery. It is propane, butane and a few other gasses. It’s known that the total available BTU content of a tank is higher for the mix and it works just fine. One tank lasted 6 months for us

Good luck with the quest.

Re: CNG stove

I have an evacuated solar tube which works as a solar oven. I use < 5% of the cooking potential it offers. Most of the time it is empty and self-cleaning as it turns any residue into a crisp powder which pours out. This really works great and with this you would not have to worry about fuel, but even if you cook on overcast/raining weather the total fuel consumed would be a lot less and your issue of refilling mitigated by several times over.

I have never used or needed a gas stove, but I am currently in the process of building a hydrogen stove setup. The intention is, the hydrogen can be generated on the boat during sunny days from excessive solar power. Hydrogen from electricity is up to 92% efficiency.

Re: CNG stove

We use one of these. Ingredients in the pots. Raise to a boil and then chuck the pots into the outer thermos. Close the top and let it cook up to 5-6 hours. Contents will stay hot enough to cook. Propane time about five minutes.

Re: CNG stove

There's a CNG fueling station in Beaumont and Corpus Christi, Texas CNG Stations for Natural Gas Vehicles
But you'll need one of these adapters to fill your tank, https://www.ebay.com/itm/18501843530...cAAOSwt-hePIHA

After the cost of the adapter, a tank refill is under $10.
