cleaning that outboard

Hi All,
I am new to the group although I have been reading some posts. So I do have a question. I run a sailpro 6hp O/B motor in a well on my boat. It stays in the water and it seems the local sea life likes it,,,, alot,,,,, I need to scrap it down some tomorrow am before taking the 34 mile journey (Boston to Gloucester) to its winter home. but,, is there anything inside I need to clean? I will pull the motor, replace lower lube, engine oil, clean it down, but if this life grew outside,, could it have grown inside the tubes of the water pathways also????? should I be worried,, or should I take this apart and clean it completely.

thanks,,,, sailing a 1967 Islander bahama 24 that I rebuilt and fixed up.

Re: cleaning that outboard

Welcome to CruisersForum, xaftmx.
Yes, many foreign things can clutter the water channels inside an outboard.

But the first thing to do is remove the water pump impeller, to prevent the blades from staying bent during the whole winter. Depending on its age, it could be a good idea to replace it with a new one next year: you don't want a blade to break away and clog a cooling channel.

My O/B is a lightweight 2.2HP for the dinghy. When cruising, it stays most of the time on the stern pulpit. But after 7 years of use, the mechanic recommended that I take it apart to clean the water channels from all the salt that had accumulated there. And yes, there was salt, and some sand, too.

You could even find some mussels or barnacles. I found small mussel shells in my Diesel engine heat exchanger.

Thanks Alain, it is / was brand new this year, has about 10 hours in total usage. it is a tahatsu sailpro 6 with an alternator to charge the batteries. I will remove the water pump impeller, flush it,,, see what goodies fall out as I clean it.

Re: cleaning that outboard

you really should keep that outboard out of the water when not in use. electrolysis will do a lot more damage to it than any sea life.
