Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

The weather here on the Chesapeake Bay will be just about perfect for cruising this weekend.

I hope to see a few boats out there.

Hiking trails or the beach will be good as well.

Fishing has also picked up with the Speckled Trout getting quite active.

Supposedly it will be. But I can't help feeling they are wrong - so we won't get any after effect from hurricane Milton? During hurricane Helene, it rained every day for a week.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

Milton is headed East (and slightly North) so we should be fine by Saturday.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

We’re starting the migration south after a great summer in the Chesapeake, so will be sailing down the Bay over the weekend. Spent this week on the Pax and now heading for Deltaville - all the cruising hotspots! See you out there.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

Closest I'll get to Deltaville is Mobjack Bay probably but may just head up the Eastern side and go into Onancock, VA. or stop earlier in Occohannock Creek.

Wind is supposed to be SW at 15 knots with gusts to 20 knots by Sunday which is good for sailing North on a boat like mine.

But it's supposed to be more out of the West by Monday, so I'll need to be on that side by then.

Then NW by Monday night which will be good for heading back South.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

We are starting our trip south on Monday or Tuesday depending on wind direction. Need to be in Beaufort on the 21st for a haul out for a bottom job. We will ICW down.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

Wind is supposed to be pretty sporty Sunday Night and Monday in some areas of the Bay with gusts to 30 knots Sunday Night and to 25 knots on Monday.

I guess I'll be trying out the second reef on my new main and running close to the Western Shore as the wind is predicted to be out of the West Monday and more NW Monday Night.

But for once, I can delay until Tuesday if necessary.

Heading to Cambridge tomorrow should be a pretty slow sail. Well off the wind, will probably pop the chute… hang out Sunday. Monday should start off as beam reach, but will quickly turn into a double reefed beat

Well, you have the boat for it, and the waterline.

I'll be getting over to the Western Side of the Bay by Sunday.

BTW, do they still talk about the book Chesapeake by Michener in Cambridge these days?

I'll soon be retiring back to the Eastern Shore (VA)

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

Toyed with Solomon’s. Or even going north. But probably the last long weekend of the year on the boat with my daughter. So I figured Id pick a place that we haven’t been to.

Yeah I’ll definitely be testing the sealing ability of my hatches and my second reef as well. Will be a day where we make lunch at the dock so it’s easy to grab.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

It was blowing hard out there today and coming into my anchorage.

I may be here until Tuesday depending.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

I came back this morning from Mobjack Bay/Severn River and stayed within a couple miles or so of the Western Shore.

Winds were howling at my anchorage last night until about 2 am then eased off.

Winds were as high as 23 knots on the way back, but I didn't notice any 30 knot gusts as they predicted.

I was hitting speed in the mid to high 6's as I had the tide and was on a reach to broad reach for much of the trip.

I had my 2nd reef in but in a lull shook it out and sure enough winds picked back up to mid 20 knot range so I just sailed it on in under full sail as I could ease off the wind by that point.

I plan to go look at a CS36 in Rock Hall, MD soon. A 29' plus waterline and another 9,000 lbs. would have made this coming home trip much better

Stingray Point Buoy recorded a 31.1 knot gust at 1:12pm and several 29 knot gusts. (out of the NW)

York River Spit 27.2 knots at 12:36pm. (WNW)

There was a large ketch that AIS said was 19 meters in length. He was on more of a close reach and was hitting speeds of 9 knots plus according to AIS.

Re: Chesapeake Bay Long Weekend Cruising

We had to run over to Kilmarkock today around 11am the white caps on the Rappahanock were not looking fun. There were two sail boats out doing a day sail. We will leave in the morning for Norfolk. Should be in Hospital Point around 4pm.
