Charter lease programs?

So we are 3-4 years away from buying a boat and living aboard 9 months a year. I was browsing boats and came across this. Am I understanding this right. I basically give them 100k euros and they charter the boat for 4 years, then at the end I buy it for 80k more euros?

We are in the US so I would obviously prefer to do it from a company over here, but is this a common thing? If so, is it a good idea? I've never really seen anything like it. We have the cash and were looking to spend about $200k on a boat so this could end up with us getting a nicer boat for our money about the time we were planning on leaving anyways.

Its quite common. All the big charter companies operate this way. Check out the Moorings page for example: https://www.mooringsyachtownership.com/.

As for whether its a good idea or not, opinions vary. You would have to look at with your specific case in mind. The usual arguments against are that you end up with a tired, used yacht and if it was such a good deal then why don't the charter companies own their own boats. (In case you don't realize it they don't.)
