Charter La Paz

We’re considering a bareboat charter in May in La Paz. The videos we’ve seen of the local cruising grounds look awesome, but we are totally unfamiliar.

Would love any info on the cruising grounds, easy/difficult, best places to go, weather that time of year, recent experiences with Covid closures, etc.

We’re looking at DYC, but would be interested in any other charter co suggestions.

We chartered last year in BVI and have mostly lake sailing experience if it helps.

Get Blue Latitude Cruising Guide for Sea of Cortez. Unrivalled.

The "islands" near La Paz are great! La Paz itzelf is great.

But beware: almost no anchorage is fully protected. Corumels pop up anytime of the year (not just Summer) - - definitely in May - - and there is little protection from them. (They are not an issue north of Bahia de la Paz.)

Re: Charter La Paz

We are in the same boat (lol) as OP, although with different timing.

We're planning to charter from DYC La Paz in August 2021. We have 7 adults.

I'm not finding a lot of information on the area or conditions in August. I do know it will be HOT. I'm interested in the same info that @Commodore64 is looking for - best places to go, cruising grounds, weather considerations. The sailing grounds appear to be relatively uninhabited and thus provisioning will be more important than some of the more populated Caribbean places we've chartered before. We don't have experience provisioning for 7 adults and recommendations in that area would be much appreciated.

I purchased the Blue Latitude Cruising Guide for Sea of Cortez from the publisher and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. Thank you for the rec!

Re: Charter La Paz

August:
>Hot!
>Corumels in eves (unpredicted switch of wind to come from West/South)
>Potential of hurricanes (though usually these come to the Baja area a little later)
> on the positive, relatively few "Northers"

We’ve decided not to go for personal reasons, but I sent a message to the “wesail” youtube couple who have been cruising there for a while. They said all the islands are open. So barring any late summer resurgence at least you have that going for you. Have a great time!
