Catamaran back to Mono

I have always been curious as to how many Catamaran owners that have actually sailed their Cats in the Ocean for at least 3-5 years return to a Mono?
I am not interested in any bashing of a particular boat, there is no perfect boat but would love to know the reasons why you returned. No need for Cat owners to comment that they will never return I realize most Cat owner love their boats but again only interested in those that returned.
Thank you for your time and comments.

Re: Catamaran back to Mono

Bumfuzzle wrote a great series on this on their blog. Short version is that the cat is more comfortable, less "homey" and more expensive. And, if you can afford it, generally wins over most categories. However, the priority is getting out there so go on whatever boat gets you there. They went from cat to mono to trawler with a number of land based adventures in between each boat.

Nice catch Matt! I haven't seen them in some time. How do you manage to work on that boat all day and stay so current? Props man!

They're the catalyst/cause of us getting into this lifestyle. So we're always interested in what they are up to.... mostly so we know where to send the love or hate depending on what we're doing that day

Re: Catamaran back to Mono

We decided to give power a go ! Sold a very comfortable sailing cat and bought a fly ridge cruiser.
Motivating factors are health, advancing age ,reduced costs and sailing conditions.
Rapidly failing eyesight has put the watchkeeping responsibility on one.
Overnighters are avoided. This has been helped by cruising at 8 or 9 knots compared to 5 or 6. Here on the east coast Australia the anchorages are often 55 to 60 miles apart. Sometimes a bar has to be crossed or the entrance is narrow with coral obstructions making a day time arrival important.
Age is what it is. There is no stopping the process. So do what you can, while one can still do it !
We’re still finding out about costs ? The catamaran was hardly in marinas while cruising, whilst the power cruiser often goes from marina to marina with far fewer night at anchor. However when not used and both are left in a marina the diminished cost of the cruiser(39ft) is a big saving over the cat (43ft). Obviously the maintenance with one motor, one head and no rig is less on the cruiser. The cost of diesel will be more. The cruiser doing 10/lt/hour at 8 knots while the cat motored 3/lt/hr at 5.5knts, both motors. Many expenses are similar except notably having to replace standing rigging every 10 years for insurance purposes.
A recent trip to far North Queensland made us revisit the “power v sail” question. In younger years we were very fortunate to spend nine years sailing the Caribbean and one year in the South Pacific. Both have (for the most part) constant easterly winds. Not so off Australia (east coast) with winds coming from exactly where one is headed a large percentage of the time. This coupled with the great distance to that nights planned anchorage ,weighed heavily in favour of power.
