A good friend of ours was recently demasted when attempting to cross
Florida Bay from little Shark River to Marathon. Everyone here in Marinatown is pulling for Alan and trying to help get him back on his way. I am hoping to find him a new (used)
mast & boom ... if anyone on the forum knows the correct size of these components it will save me from having to find that info elsewhere.
Since this is bound to be questioned ... yes ... he did a number of things wrong that led to this situation.
#1, His
water pump quit working and he didn't know how to
repair it.
#2, Although he knew that a cold front was approaching from the North, he was not aware of the severe storm that it was pulling in from the South.
#3, His
rigging was original to the
boat, now 26 years old and way overdue for replacement.
We have all read the "Go NOW!" posts ... and there is much to be said for that ... this points out a few of the caveats to that idea.
