Cargo Sjhip Grounds on Farne Islands

Ooops!!

Cargo ship remains stranded on Farne Islands - Local Headlines - Berwickshire News

BBC News - Danio cargo vessel runs aground on Farne Islands

Looks like another case of the watch keeper nodding off.
Both anchors nicely stowed in the pipes, and AIS has her at 10 kts just before coming to a sudden stop. The light house should have been a big clue if someone was paying attention.

Live Ships Map - AIS - Vessel Traffic and Positions

So...radar guard ring OFF, AIS off, GPS alarm to waypoint OFF.

Poor fellow is deaf AND sleepy, and should be imprisoned for negligence.

Maybe he was experimenting...which is tougher...the hull or the rocks? Some poor underwater creature is trying to figure out what did it do to have its house demolished! Mauritz

Just asking…. If this happened to a fellow yachtsman… would the sarcasm be as heavy?

Should we feel sorry for his negligence? Should we feel sorry for the captain of the Concordia? Should we feel sorry for the captain of the Bounty? The world is full of incompetent captains. The seas are unforgiving. Sarcasm aside, if you or I hit bottom, no one will feel sorry for either of us; that is the reality of it! Mauritz

Once the facts are established in an enquiry, then blame and recommendations should and can be made.
Just as in the high profile events you gave. But this is premature.

Do we hold commercial watch-keepers to a higher standard than yachtsmen?
If so, then why? Since we both carry ‘deluxe cargo’

How is that relevant? We're talking about a 80m vessel allegedly staffed by professional seafarers, not some old duffer working through his bucket list.

In similar past incidents, one common factor is an overworked and underpaid watchkeeper.
These ships carry two watchkeepers, Master and Mate, working 6 on 6 off.
The Mate is also responsible for the cargo operations.
Some of these coasters have hectic schedules, with the Master and Mate both ending up suffering from sleep deprevation.
There have been a number of studies into this watch keeping system, and the conclusions are that its not good on a working cargo ship. However, it will need government intervention to put an end to it.
Note the ships flag state, definitely flag of convenience.
