Cape Charles Cup- Lower Chesapeake Bay

I happened to be sailing out yesterday morning and so were many others so I figured it was the yearly race to Cape Charles which is about a 16 mile race on day one.

So I decided to sail out 5 miles to the starting line to see the start(s).

Their were 58 boats registered and it appeared most were at or near the starting lines around 10 am.

The starting lines are North of the Thimble Shoal Shipping Channel to keep crazy racers from crossing the bows of ships.

I did enjoy seeing all the racing boats with their high priced sails and this one other boat. I was heaved too waiting for the start and was able to get a shot of it with my phone as he was doing circles either waiting to sail/race of just hanging out for the start

Wow, Thomm!

She's a classic, for sure! Did you find out who she was? Did she race?

Warmly,

Looking at the 2019 photos of the same race, it looks like the boat was a replica of the schooner VIRGINIA

Schooner Virginia

The schooner VIRGINIA is a reproduction of the last all-sail vessel built for the Virginia Pilot Association. The original ship sailed for the pilots off the Virginia Capes from 1917-1926, training apprentice harbor pilots in seamanship and navigation. The new schooner, built and launched in Norfolk (near Harbor Park) in 2005, has been placed into service by the Nauticus Foundation and a dedicated group of schooner volunteer workers and crew members. The VIRGINIA is a platform for sail training and teaching maritime sciences, history, teamwork and leadership with an emphasis on the youth of Hampton Roads. The VIRGINIA serves the Nauticus mission to benefit our community through education, impactful experiences, and by sharing access to maritime resources.

The schooner VIRGINIA is berthed at Nauticus and open to the public for pier-side visitation. Volunteers are welcome…the VIRGINIA has a formal crew training program…experience not required. For volunteer information please contact schoonerinfo@nauticus.org or visit us on Facebook.
More information can be found on the Nauticus website at https://nauticus.org/schooner-virginia/

Virginia held the record for the Down the Bay race from new Annapolis to Hampton Roads, and I wouldn't be surprised if it still stands.
