Canadian sloop, Tanzer
Hi, I am looking at a Tanzer 10.5 built in Canada that is basically the same as a Southerly, I cannot find much for reviews, do any of you know about Tanzer quality or things I need to be aware of?
Thank you in advance.

Tanzers are decent build quality overall. Their designs tend to be a little bit odd, you either like them or not. I don't think they sold many of the 10.5s. Was on one at the boat show decades ago and it seemed like a nice boat.

Re: Canadian sloop, Tanzer
Not many Tanzer were built.
Tanzer is known for it's 22 footer and 26 footers.
They were built before the petroleum crisis. After that Tanzer got into finacial troubles and tried to move to the larger boat market. But the Economy did not help and they went bankrupt in 1986 or so.
I have never seen a 10.5 even if it was built about 20 miles from were I live

In the March/April 2019 (current) issue of Good Old Boat, they have a review of the Southerly 115 and also a comparison piece that also includes the Tanzer 10.5.
I believe that the smaller Tanzers are generally well-built and sail well; I have not seen or heard anything about the 10.5 but I would certainly look at one if I was in that market.

Re: Canadian sloop, Tanzer
Tanzers seem to have a happy following for a production boat. I lusted after their 34 / 10.5 footer with the drop keel years ago. I think they only made a few before going out of business.
It was a cool design and seems to check a lot of boxes for me for gunkholing etc: Shallow draft, simple supported rudder hung outside the hull, raised galley etc.

I was a happy owner of a Tanzer 22 for several years in northwestern Michigan on Travese Bay. Solid boat; iron keel, which was always a a bit of a problem as hard to fair. They have as someone said upthread, a look you either love or hate. But she went fast and was strong; I never raced but we frequently outsailed Catalina 30's.
