Well, belizesailor, maybe not. But there have been many posts on various threads about relative sailing performance, mostly between cats and monohulls and my original post and the my subsequent comments are expressions about how well my boat sails in those conditions and how much I enjoyed it. And like I said, I always like to share that type of sailing enjoyment with others, maybe some opinions will change.

However, I know Hobie 33's quite well and have sailed against them many times. It is a great boat, and can do well upwind, and superbly off the wind. Maybe the Wildcat 35, a Schionning I think, can also sail well. So my point is lost on you. But don't pretend that this type of sailing performance isn't unusual among cruisers, it is. And those cruisers who never experience the fun of sailing fast, (and upwind) are missing out.

I think this type of sailing performance is not that unusual, but agree that it is less common for most cruisers to take advantage of it.

Yes, the Hobie 33 has incredible windward ability, and will sail on a gust from a butterfly wing, but it is no cruising boat...certainly not per my wife, or folks who get lapped by it during a regatta. Its light enough to scull quite well w the rudder, so I rarely even mount the motor.

The Wildcat 35 does pretty well to windward. It will happily sail at 40-45 AWA and pinch to 35 AWA. At about 35 AWA I can get enough drive to make motor sailing worthwhile. Of course, like many SA cats it has a low bridge deck clearance so bridge deck slap becomes an issue going hard to windwad in bumpy conditions. Its reputed Schionning lineage is less clear to me, but it does have that look. However, unlike most of his designs the Wildcat as built favors comfort over speed.

Nothing beats a nice sail-day out.
Reaching destination in good time and settling in before sunset.
Nice!
