Yep Mike, me too. I need all the space I can get on my boat. Speaking of space, and I know this is a goofy topic but I am still hoping that someone has contemplated the space-time continuum inside the small boat and surpassed the Special Theory to come up with something better, but this is all I got on the subject of dealing with trash on the small boat. A good pair of shears for cutting the heavier plastics: a plastic bag by the companionway to catch the daily stuff and then a compactor in the form of a large laundry soap bucket that fits a size 11 foot and has a waterproof lid.... but I still really don't have a good spot for the big bucket that's very accessible. How could Sparkman and Stephens not have considered that?

Don, the orange juice or milk jug that you have to pack back to land. That puppy will hold heaps of filthy plastic trash, cut into strips, and pushed into it with a wooden spoon. We've tried it on a couple of passages, and it works quite well, scentless, except when open. We have to find substitutes for the containers, because we use powdered milk, and fresh oranges, but fresh orange peel can go into the containers. (Mostly, ours are yoghurt jugs, and pickle jars, but it depends on what you have, and how dedicated you are to compacting your trash. Basically, if it came with you, you can take it back. The challenge is to make it smaller, and odorless!

Yup, the old foot stomp works for me to. Like I say, it helps to be a 200+ pounder .

We just don’t end up with much plastic garbage, so this is not an issue. Our biggest garbage is tin/aluminum cans from the food and, er, drink. Our compostable material gets collected and donated back to the sea whenever we’re out of an anchorage. We sometimes generate a collection of paper/boxboard (from all the wine boxes ). A shore fire takes care of that.
