Calebra to St. Thomas-might as well fish

Planning 8 or 9 day trip out of St. Thomas. Considerng a 3 day run over to Vieques and Calebra. I have read the trip back can be slow and ami willing to go under power. I have heard these islands are worth it. Has anybody every done this and fished the southern shelf on the way back. Thinking of doing that till directly south of Water Island and then if a nice normal east wind doing a nice beam reach the last 6/7 miles and at anchor in time to put the days catch on the grill for supper. Thoughts/ other suggestions. Happy Thanksgiving!

Assume you mean Culebra and Vieques.

Lots of reports of dinghy theft and breakins on Vieques last I checked so might avoid there. Also it was pretty well wiped out in the hurricane a couple of years back and also have heard it's still in bad shape.

Maybe someone on the forum has some recent, first hand updates.

Re: Calebra to St. Thomas-might as well fish

We made the trip from Culebra to St. Thomas in Feb '18. Upwind work but it's a daysail. As I recall we mostly made it on one tack, had to flop over for about a mile then tack back. Trades were reasonable/moderate at the time, nothing too strenuous.

Culebra itself is OK, but nothing I'd have to do again. We preferred Luis Pena just to the west, better swimming and snorkeling which is what we like to do once the sailing is done.

No thoughts on the fishing/Vieques.
