Butyl Tape Sources - Alternative to Bed-it

Looking for alternative brands to Bed-it butyl tape as it is no longer available in the p-base store.

What brand/source have you used for butyl tape to good effect?

Thanks in advance.

I've always gotten my butyl betting from New Found Metals in Port Townsend, Washington. They also have closed cell foam tape.

Used extensively in recreational vehicles. Just go to any RV store. Often a variety of colours and sizes, often at half the price of a marine chandlery.

As usual...!

Remember, not good on any fitting that can rotate, like some thruhulls. Also do not expect final tightness immediately, but to re-tighten after a few days. Great stuff.

Cheers, R.

I should have added, not to be used below the waterline. RR.

mcmaster always sold it, before any of these other outlets and sellers existed.

Always struggle to understand why people are so particular about where they get it.

As you said. It’s how things are sealed on RV roofs and has been since the dawn of time. It’s available everywhere, from RV shops to Ace hardware.

That is very sad to hear. The issue isn't where you can buy butyl tape, it's everywhere. The issue is where you can buy high quality butyl tape. I haven't found another brand that comes close to bed-it's quality.

It was of better quality. New RVs I've seen a lot more goop in a tube these days. Give a guy a cordless powered gun and you can bed stuff more than 3x faster especially on big roofs in a factory. The RV stuff was good once upon a time. The last time I tried some was about 6 years ago and it was crap by then, less gummy and more stringy if that makes sense. Better off with 4000UV.
However a good source is actually some boat manufacturers. There's a specific type of black butyl with essentially a rubber "core" that looks like the rubber of an O-ring. I think we used to get it from Meridian. Great stuff. Obviously not suitable in some applications because you can't fully compress it. The absolute bomb for windows though.

Re: Butyl Tape Sources - Alternative to Bed-it

It’s all exactly the same.

Yes, it may vary slightly in texture and appearance, but once you put any of it between some things you are tightening together with fasteners, it all squishes out and it all becomes fully waterproof for eternity.

There is no difference except the one you’re making up in your mind about preferring one texture over another.

All the textures do the same thing. They squeeze between things being tightened by fasteners and keep water out for decades, if not forever.

Even old, crusty, contaminated butyl scraps you balled together after cutting it from the edges of a previous project that is half dried out work just fine.

It’s truly remarkable, yet simple stuff.

Shouldn't the stuff auto glass replacement people use work as well on a boat?
