It's a very unusual Cat 2. One that refuses to move and it has dumped a couple FEET of rain on Pensacola.

Water is tough to deal with.

Also depending on which bridge it was, there was a runaway barge with a small crane on it jammed under one of the bridges in Pensacola.......the 3 mile bridge to Gulf Breeze. This may be that bridge. Sorta looks like it.

Re: Bridge out at Pensacola

If that bridge is designed like the Pontchartrain Causeway, it's designed to give way if hit by an errant barge, and a spare section is just laid on the pilings.

The *new* bridge is the *3-mile* bridge from Pensacola to Gulf Breeze. They have been working on it for years and I do not know if actually completed. (Last time announcement of completion was made, it turned out one side was fully completed)
The bridge it replaces, was famous for having "$1 Million" bike lanes, as upgrades to allow a vehicle to pull over in an emergency resulted in shoulders barely safe for bicycle traffic.

Re: Bridge out at Pensacola

It was the 3 mile bridge that was damaged.

Re: Bridge out at Pensacola

Those bridges have had their history. (I am sure most do, but growing up near that one makes it stand out) The older drawbridge was closed long before I was born, used as fishing piers in my lifetime. Gulf Breeze required you to walk out, Pensacola allowed vehicles. 1.4 miles in the sun/heat carrying or pulling your gear...those were great times (@16 I used the 'Cola side, where I could drive)
I remember an airliner crash landed under the center rise at one point. Now a section has failed so soon after completion.
My last trip through I saw that Gulf Breeze no longer has the fishing pier (old drawbridge) The Pensacola side looked to be doing well (lots of people fishing)

Re: Bridge out at Pensacola

The pensacola bay bridge is the “3 mile bridge”.
The south bound span was completed recently and is temporarily being used for both north and south bound traffic. Work has begun on the north bound span. Construction and crane barges for the bridge are usually moved miles away when there’s an approaching storm. For some reason they weren’t this time. A barge came loose and got wedged under a section of the completed span. Not sure if this is where the span is now missing. The storm surge may have lifted the barge dislodging the bridge section. Alternatively it may have been another part of the bridge where a crane on a barge collapsed and fell across a section of the bridge.
