Re: Brewer's Yacht Haven West Demolished
Stamford is set up for a showdown with its biggest developer and one of its largest property owners, Building and Land Technology.
The Norwalk company is remaking a chunk of the old industrial South End into Harbor Point, a neighborhood of high-end rentals with waterfront views. It's a project developers have attempted for 30 years.
During that time city officials have insisted that, however the South End is remade, one thing must remain -- a working boatyard, a messy place where boats are put in, hauled out, scraped and painted; where holes in hulls are repaired and propellers and engines are fixed out of water; where sails are rigged and boats can be pumped out, fueled up, washed and stored for the winter.

Re: Brewer's Yacht Haven West Demolished
The city's Zoning Board will tell the developer of Harbor Point to halt construction at a contested 14-acre boatyard site in the South End that is part of a redevelopment plan.
"Close it up, chain it, gate it, don't go back to it until you come back to us with a plan," said Tom Mills, the board's chairman at a meeting late Monday.
Board members unanimously voted to approve a draft resolution that orders property owner and developer Building and Land Technology to cease all construction activities on the property, including the removal or deposit of soils, until the board has received and approved an application to redevelop the site.
The finalized version of the resolution that was issued on Tuesday also stipulated BLT must provide the board with a timeline within 30 days for the site's remediation, which requires various state permits.
Afterward, the developer must report to the board every two weeks as well as provide the board with copies of its communications with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

Re: Brewer's Yacht Haven West Demolished
An update:
After weeks of mounting pressure, the developer of Harbor Point announced for the first time at a public hearing this week that it would build a working boatyard as part of its development in the South End.
"Harbor Point is committed to having a working boatyard for Stamford," said John Freeman, a lawyer and spokesman for developer Building and Land Technology, on Monday night before a packed crowd at Turn of River Middle School.
It was the first time Freeman publicly used the term "working boatyard" in describing his firm's redevelopment plans. In December, BLT razed a 14-acre working boatyard, Brewer's Yacht Haven, without zoning approval.
Up until recently, the developer had only promised to replace the boatyard with a "full-service marina" that would not be able to perform out-of-water repairs nor service boats longer than 50 feet.

Re: Brewer's Yacht Haven West Demolished
They did that to the yard I worked in as a pup... It now is all condos; UNSOLD condos in foreclosure, unkempt, and falling down. It made one man rich, broke another, put 30 people out of work, removed the only boatyard left for 30 miles either direction..... And the politicians called it "progress". At least the ones in this story are getting it right.
